No facebook here. I dont trust their privacy terms and how they handle personal information. Plus, its a data-mining site for government agencies, every time you see a big crime happening the first thing they check and make news about is the person's facebook page. Not that I do any illegal stuff of course Razz , but on principle I dont want to have my info there.

Plus it feels like a totally shallow form of social interaction, and a time-stealer. I already spend much time on the Nexus (though I get my responsibilities done nonetheless), but at least here I feel im genuinely learning and helping others and that this community can deeply change people's lives.

I refuse to get a facebook account. Partly because of the reasons endlessness mentioned and partly because I don't want to feel obligated to do all that facebook crap; adding friends, post comments on walls, put up pictures....it's all a little too much. I just don't care enough to do all that stuff. Sometimes I think about getting one for practical reasons, but I always talk myself out of it. My wife, on the other hand, loves facebook. She is on there more than I am on the nexus. Even my dad has one. I feel like I am behind the times, but I still don't want one.

With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know. - Hunter S. Thompson

I have a facebook account but I'm very careful about what I tell it.

The thing I don't trust is that if you "delete" your account, then say sign up a year later, all the pictures you uploaded will be assigned to your account. So basically if you tell facebook something just once, it will never forget it.

I don't really use it all that much, as someone who is worth contacting is worth picking up the telephone. However if I come across a funny video you betcha I'll send it to a facebook friend.

I also like that informs me of when my favourite artists are touring all in one place, so I don't need to keep constantly trawling google to find out what's going on.

However it's a big fat cop-out that it reminds you when people's birthdays are. I've made a stand not to wish someone a happy birthday if facebook has to remind me. If I don't remember your birthday, the chances are I don't give a shit. Likewise I don't make my date of birth viewable to anyone else. It just doesn't seem like a sincere sign of appreciation when you click on my name, prompted by facebook once a year and write to words. Buncha phony's!

But for people whose opinions I value the highest on this thing we call the interweb, I look no further than the good ol' nexus, where I spend most of my browsing time Smile

Totally agree same reasons for me. I read a story on a forum about this woman who was on a dating site and she seen her two friends pictures as the happy couple, like this could be you, she showed her friends and they had no idea but they thought it was funny, facebook must have sold those pictures to that dating site and the couple wouldnt know or get anything from it, unbeleivable. Two of my best mates keep saying I have to get it, would have been handy when I was on holiday or my mates are away as it comes up as a text message on my iphone when you get a message but Ill only get it if I go travelling for an extended time, even then I would just use it for keeping in touch with close friends.

No facebook here either. I hate spending too much time behind my computerscreen. I rather be outside in the real world.

Good that it along with other social media, is helpfull in topling dictatorial regimes though. (only when it's succesfull, or they'll find you and make you wish you where never born).

I have a love/hate relationship with facebook. It's allowed me to make new friends and keep up with events happening in my area and help me be more social. At the same time I waste a lot of time browsing and feeling envy, and being anti-social. I also dislike the privacy implications and government surveilance, but at the same time it seems the social networking could promote freedom.

Overall I'm wanting to form a more healthy relationship with facebook and utilize it for the benefits it has to offer without letting myself get lost in it.

I don't see the issue so clearly--- I have a lot of friends in far-off places with whom I would like to keep the option of contact open with, and facebook is a very reliable way to do that. Emails and phone numbers change with the wind, but you can always get in touch with someone via their facebook account (if they have one).

you make a good point i do see that as a positive aspect, but for the people who just sit on there day in, day out, telling everyone there plans like work tonight 8-11pm going to whatever bar, club blah blah blah, yes facebook is a very good resource when it comes to contacting old friends but telling everyone your plans, NOT MANY PEOPLE CARE, you could have a rapist or a murderer easily just watch through your post and find you that easily. idk i just feel too many people are just drooling in front of the computer wasting there life on this site, its almost like a conditioning, facebook is everywhere on tv at the store on your phone etc etc i think if you are on that site more than 8 hrs a day you should take a break.

This is where im coming from to.

and where as i understand the 'envy' thing people talk about, i also have a genuine interest in peoples lives. It makes me smile to find out what my old school friends are doing with themselves today, see theyre families, lifestyles etc. It can also put you on to some really brilliant social events/talks/meetings that would have previously slipped you by or be alot harder to organise. http://www.youtube.com/w...fvE&feature=related this event for example, one of the best days last year! so fun!

I don't think there's anything wrong with a facebook account. If you are concerned about privacy you can always provide false information when signing up...

Like the previous poster said, facebook is more reliable than a phone number for keeping in touch with distant friends, that's mainly what I use it for.

I have an account but I dont add people usually..all kinds of people try to add me that I know I dont care to see anymore etc so I dont know why I would add them or why they try to add me..the whole facebook scene is very shallow at times. Basically I talk to nexus people there, and thats the only reason I signed up. I have a few friends from my home that are abroad so it works to talk to them that way but other than that facebook is rediculous...the whitty little signatures everyone frantically posts daily about whats on they're mind get old real fast...facebook is a joke.
Long live the unwoke.

EIGHT hours a day? I think you should take a break if you spend one or two!

Also, definitely agree regarding organizing events. Events are SO EASY to organize using Facebook, and would be troublesome otherwise.
