I did an A/B on some xylene that ive used to pull the last spice from my STB tek,

I might have gotten some lye with the solvent but it´s hard to tell since the lye solution is preety clear when there is no mimosa bark laying around.

How can i tell if my dmt has some lye residues left in it? i have re-x it twice and then made changa (stupid) of it already but i have not smoked any so far.

Can i tell from the smell or taste somehow and how bad is it if there is a tiny bit in it?

also if i presume some lye came along can i clean up the changa somehow?

I'd imagine since you've already made changa with it, you'd probably not be able to do much clean up now.

If there is lye in there, the smoke will most likely be pretty harsh.

You'd probably be able to tell pretty quick.

Ok i was already afraid of any xylene contaminations and now i´m afraid of the lye too, not a good mind state if i would try this stuff out anytime soon.

i guess i will put this in a emergeny changa box if the world ends and i´m dying or something, that way it won´t matter if i get sick from smoking it Smile

Also how bad is it to smoke lye? i would guess it´s preety unhealthy.

So the vaporization temperature of lye suggests that it shouldn't come through, but many members have had trouble with spice that a re-x or sodium carbonate wash took care of. If you try a little bit, it will be fairly obvious you have a contamination, from other reports.

If you've rextalized twice it is not something I would be worried about.

If somehow there was lye in your spice AND you were somehow able to vaporize it, you'd know pretty quick.

The most common way to have lye in your spice is to get some basic solution (jet black) mixed in with your solvent...which is pretty hard to do without noticing it, then evap...

To test for lye in changa you might in theory be able to soak a portion of it in water then check the pH of that. a pH above 11 probably indicates lye. You always want to wash your NP solvents with a water/sodium carbonate solution to remove lye traces. If you smoke it through a bong you will be ok, the main danger of lye is inhaling the particles, the bp of NaOh is 1400c.

Don't rush and don't smoke it until you're sure it's clean. my first time I did a quick and dirty extraction using an unknown bottle named just "paint thinner", and also when separating the solvent from mimosa+lye soup, some soup came along together with the solvent (I didn't mind because it just a little). the end product was a light red oil, smelling like kerosene, I scrubbed the oily dish with some mint, rolled a joint with the oily mint, and even while not being able to finish the joint .... was coughing shit out of my throat for 3 weeks.

Don't rush.

Better yet, use simple and highly efficient lye-free tek of Q21Q21, it rules, is simple and the product is great

dmt freebase is not water soluable

lye is

so perhaps some kind of brief encounter with some cold water (within a metal tea infuser ball) would remove the lye without removing the dmt ??

anyone care to comment?

^ that would remove lye from the surface area, but any (if any could be) trapped within the crystal lattice of the spice it would stay there. Personally I'd be much more concerned about solvent contamination than lye contamination.

NaOH does not make the smoke harsh. base liquid does. NaOH will show zero response to the low heat used in smoking. any taste or harshness from base liquid contam is from plant matter.

I usually wash my extractions with water and check the pH, it's always around 7. There's virtually no NaOH in the crystals as long as there's no black gunk from base water, as acolos_5 already pointed out.

anyone care to comment?

I also wondered this? Can spice just be washed with some ph7 ice cold water or would the ph7 of the water make the spice slightly water soluble?

I remember the old heard about ice cold ammonia wash and i think that is just nasty. Does the water being used to wash spice have to be alkaline?

we have a similar question. once finish with a first extract, we drop spice back into the lye/water solution. then pull with naptha from this. now separating these two layers is harder than the first time, since the first time had a bunch of black bark in it. this time the lye/water is almost the same color as the naptha. we use our good eyes(and a clear syringe), but is always a worry of ours.
