when trying to speed up separation of layers or break up emulsion, can adding lye to the mixture too fast cause any problems. could it cause the mixture to heat up too much and be detrimental to the dmt or mixture?

No it wont be detrimental to either the DMT or the mixture. The only thing that could happen is that the jug could get pretty hot. But dont be dumping loads at a time, slowly does it.

If the solvent is already present, adding lye directly to the emulsion can overheat the solvent and have some nasty effects. It is best to make a saturated solution separately and wait for it to cool before adding.

so it would probably be wise just to have some basified water handy to break up emulsion

As long as it is fully saturated, yes. The only downside of increasing the pH with a solution is the volume change that will occur. If you have plain (non iodized) salt, you can add this directly to your soup to clear emulsions.
