i found a good idea out there(sorry i have no link) using a mason jar, once your crystals are formed in your freezer and you would be ready to filter turn the jaar upside down, to have your crystals on the top out of the solvent to drain of any excess for a few hours then you will have crystals w/o any excess solvent

As far as your sticky goo...I would have 2 questions.

1)Did you heat your naptha while extracting?...warm/hot will pull more oxide/jungle...Hence making it more "gooey" (Hydroscopic? I believe is at least close enough to the right term)

2)What color is the goo?

Likely if you scrape all your gunk together and re-X it will solidify/firm up/whiten.....unless it's green/blue...then it's no-go...dump it and try again.

As far as life span...I've seen mine sitting for a few weeks in a cool dark place...will likely last a good bit longer than that and even more so in an airtight container under same conditions. I can't say what full shelf life is but I think the references to "old spice" I've read were in terms of a few months to a year or so before degrading.

Does Changa infusion prolong or increase breakdown rate? Anyone know?

As far as "eating"....get to a tan/yellow wax at least I would think....I know I'm not eating (or smoking) "goo".

And yes if you just let full evap occur you should end up with yellow spice (not jungle unless your naptha was very hot from what I understand)...though you may have to re-x

The goo was white on the cold glass, but turned yellow when touched. It looked and felt like ear wax.

What's wrong with blue/green spice? Does that only happen with camp fuel solvents? Also, why wouldn't you eat or smoke goo? Is it bad? Thanks.

A friend usually does a mini A/B on dark-brown-yellow goo and gets beautiful snow-white spice. The steps are very simple:

1. Evap completely NP solvent (naphta) from your goo.
2. Redissolve the goo in ~100 ml of dH2O acidified to ~3 with white vinegar.
3. Decant, filter and discard the solids.
4. Basify the liquid to pH ~12.
5. Do 3-4 pulls with ~20 ml of naphta. More pulls are better than a single pull or two using the same total amount of naphta. With many small pulls and vigorous stirring there is no need to heat the naphta. With pH=12 and higher naphta separates within minutes even after a lot of shaking.
6. Combine all pulls. Usually naphta at this stage is completely clear.
7. Reduce naphta to ~1/5th or less of its original volume in a water bath at temps below 60C. This friend's naphta becomes cloudy while still in the water bath.
8. Cool naphta gradually to room temp, by keeping your naphta jar in the same water bath off the hot plate.
9. Move the jar to the fridge for several hours. Keep the jar closed.
10. Put the jar in a freezer. Keep the jar closed. Usually the whole freeze-precip pocess takes 12 to 24 hours.

She extracted 50 g of MHRB with IPA that pulls everything and still managed to get very clean spice with a decent 0.82% yield.

Thanks for all that.... but I'm just wondering why go through all that trouble? Why not just use the goo? I'm not saying I know better, I'm asking because I don't know why. Does the goo have naphtha in it? What exactly is getting purified out of the yellow/brown goo when you do a recrystalization and/or all those other steps?

I had two concerns about the goo. First it was really difficult or impossible to gather up. So if the goo has to be gathered up to further purify it, I'm still at square one. And I was also worried the goo had naphtha impurities in it. Thanks.
