SWIM just performed his first extraction from the new powdered bark he received. 300g yielded 2.7g from the first pull alone. In SWIMs previous extractions, the first pull has typically had a low yield, somewhere between .1-.2%. SWIM is certainly excited about his pull, but he is concerned also. He has heard of large yields equaling low potency.

SWIM didnt do anything different than usual. 3 separate 100g extractions with 100ml of heptane per extraction. SWIM uses a stainless steel ladle to incorporate the heptane into the soup, waits for the heptane to separate, then repeats twice.

SWIM doesnt heat his mixture, the one time he did, he ran into a few problems. Now he just warms his solvent in a water bath with hot tap water.

I'm not positive as my friend has never done his initial fb extraction with heptane, only used heptane to recrystal.
however I know you can even get a gram of spice in 25-30ml if heated....
so your yeild doesnt seem to surprising from your first pull...
if you have heptane then you shoul be able to deffently get smokeable quality spice ,
you may want to recrystal but thats easy..

That's not true at all.

the only way you could get a large yield of low potency is if it was full of garbage. swims only used naptha and xylene in his pulls so is unfamiliar with how well heptane would pull, however he also notices that for him the first pull is always the strongest/highest yield. i would say just continue about your biz as usual, recrystallize and be happy

PS why are you using heptane for pulling? as it is not as cost effective as something as naptha?

some folks prefer heptane because it may be more a 'natural' solvent. natural does not always mean safer. i am still wondering if Bestine brand heptane is confirmed to come from the Jeffrey pine resin. ==that would make me

naptha comes in various mixes. it is not as pure a solvent. naptha is not listed as a carcinogen, but some of it possible components are (benzene, ethylbenzene). one msds i read says it contains small amounts of xylene and toulene as well.

Either im getting a great deal on heptane or i was spending way too much on naphtha. Heptane is only $2 more for a 32oz container. Since its the more pure solvent, its well worth it.

so wait, what are your costs on say 32oz of naptha, xylene, and heptane, and what form are you buying it in? i get approx 1000ml naptha for about $4-5 at ace hardware?

Yeah, it appears i was way overpaying for naptha. I was paying $12 for 1000ml.

ouch, that sucks! lol! swims friend buys it by the gallon for $12-14
