Could i ask how big these species are?

-edit i have looked around and found some measurements but its hard to tell because some claim it to be 2m tall that is huge...

Anyone recognize this species of grass? I live in Southern California and see this stuff everywhere! Looks to be Phalaris, but the seeds are definitely different than anything I've seen online...any help would be appreciated, thanks! : )

Im thinking this may be phalaris arundinacea. Can anyone confirm this? Just found it in an old irigation ditch. Id like to collect more soon if its a phalaris since i imagine the city may cut it soon because its near a park.

@ innervoyage29, that is definitely not phalaris arundinacea.

@ tempest, the grass you have on the photo grows abundantly where i live and is not phalaris arundinacea either.

Wild Phalaris Arundinacea. small bundle flowers, and very small and narrow leaves. one of the photos is the ligule membrane. :

Thanks for the help with this Ambivalent! These are tricky to id it seems. I have done some research but yes tricky.
So the leaves and flowers seem too big to be wild arundinacea. These do have a ligule membrane, they got a bit dry over night but here is a pic. Can you articulate on what features a phalaris ligule would set it apart from this one?

@jamie
i think its a phalaris arundi. just a wild growing one. you can check the wikipedia photo, its identical. and the fact that it has a prominent ligule membrane confirms it to some degree.

@tempest
yes this one does look like phalaris arundinacea to me, but i dont know which variant it is, or how active it is, or if it is active at all. but you can google it. it is the identical plant from the wiki picture.

^ I can almost guarantee that pic you posted is not phalaris arundinacea. The flowers look nothing like that.

The leaf blades in your pics dont resemble phalaris either IME.

Just my opinion thoough..I have been working with wild arundinacea for about 6 years, have done many extactions on it and also grown clones. I know what arundinacea looks like and I have never seen a flower head that looks like that..it looks in that pic like the leaf blades bend like a V shape going up the length of the blade..which is something pharlaris does not do.

If wikipedia has pics like that I would say maybe wikipedia also has a mid ID'd pic up.

Thank you jamie for your input, I agree that most of the flowers that I see online look more like little wings and that they are closer to the stem than any of these pictures. Does anyone know if the test kits from bunk police are worthwhile for tryptamines?

i dont say you dont have your fair share of experience with phalaris. but i think you are under estimating how variable Arundinacea can be, depending on the climate conditions it grows in. i have seen the arundinacea you are talking about, and even if the flowers are bigger and clumped, when fully mature i have observed they get more spreaded, similar to the photo i posted above.

nevertheless, the plant in the photo above is i think another variant of arundinacea, smaller growing with different flowers. and i think the photos in wikipedia are not miss id'd, because even the page with german translation has a same variant with spreaded flowers. so, two photos of the same type, i dont think its a coincidence or a mistake.

Hi All,

I have a sneaking suspicion this is Phalaris. Could you help confirm/deny this claim?

Thank You,

leaf blades look more long and thin, and possibly with that V sort of shape going up the length of them..which is unlike any arundinacea I am familiar with. The grass is that picture looks like another grass that I see all over around here that people seem to mistake for phalaris.

It is hard to be sure though without actually seeing the grass myself.
