It's important to note, the "one drop" mentality was originally a white racist ideal. This meant, one drop of any non-white blood made you the race of that one drop. It's very odd that the african-american community accepted this, by and large.

Because I reject the one drop idea, I have always seen Obama as more than the first black president. He's the first of many different races, because like me he's a major mutt! But I don't judge anyone for thinking of him as the first black president, since he still is, and it's cool that as a nation we can actually do that.

I still don't like a lot of his policies, though. I really think the two party system fails the people. Oh well, the system works in some ways. Us Washingtonians have a glimmer of green hope!!Big grin

you and me both..

but he represents differences, which the other party seem to be rather intolerant of.
between the lesser of two evils, I choose demos kratos.. the people's party
(albeit i'm more left libertarian, rather than authoritarian).

social conservativism is, well, stupid. populations/demographics are dynamic.

^^^ Me too! It's actually really frustrating, we shouldn't have the "lesser of two evils" to choose from. I guess we don't though. I look at voting third party as voting against the two party system. Unfortunately it sometimes means the greater of two evils gets elected by less turn out for the lesser of the two evils! What's one to do? I don't know, I just talked myself into a circle.

I used to be pretty well... brainwashed? I think that's a bit harsh of a word, but close to it. Since working to truly open my mind, I have seen just how similar the two parties are to each other. The tactics they use, the way they see all of the wrongs of the other side, never the wrongs of their own side, and so on, they are SO similar. I have a hard time seeing which one represents me. I like parts of both, and dislike parts of both.
Parties serve themselves, and not the people. Just the way I see it, anyway.

Yay for the outcome Smile

No matter how you look at it, Mittens was a much scarier prospect worldwide (never mind the mess the GOP campaign has been, just look at where was Trump, Adelson or Netanyahu's money).

Sigh of relief then. Congrats, US.

This whole thing is just circus made for all of you thinking something will finally happened, thinking you had some say in something that was already decided.

Dont you get it ? You have no say. You are just a sheep to them, just a working slaves. Faster you understand this better for you.

Come on dude... We know that. If I was in the US I wouldnt vote for Obama, but Im sure I would at least cross my fingers for the mormon, his creepy sidekick and his Stepford wife to NOT win. In my country, over 90% preferred Obama to win given two options to choose from. What's so hard to understand about that?

I would like to add to this: america is a little bigger than an oiltanker and we all know how much it takes to change to course of such a thing.
Ofcourse obama was a bit of a dissapointment for many people, but REAL change takes time and there´s only one way to make it happen: small steps. One at a time.

You can complain all you want about there not being much choice. But only by taking these little steps, one at a time, we´ll get to the point where real alternatives start to be available.

I know what i´m talking about. And not just me. There are plenty of people here, who have been through a crisis themselves, and who have managed to climb out of the abyss. Like ice house for instance, who managed to beat the curse of alcoholism. He will confirm this: taking a small step each single day, and to consistently keep making these small steps will mean so much on the long run. That´s what makes changes happen. These small steps we make, each and every day. (ofcourse the analogy is a bit flawed as a country is not a person, but you have to forgive my tired brain, i stayed-up all night to watch the elections from the other side of the atlantic. Normally my analogy´s are realy top notch Wink )

But anyway, to get from A to B, you have to start at A, wich is the point where we are now, where election campains cost a few billion dollars. But if you want to go to a place where all of this this isn´t so, you still have to start from here. That´s just the way it is.

No-one can predict the future, but i believe that if it isn´t for some giant asteroid hitting the earth and whiping out all live on it, our grandchilderen will look back at the beginning of the millenium, and be gratefull for the whole crisis thing we´re in today. Because they will say when they look back at these days 'it forced those senile old grandparents of ours, to stand up for once and make some choices'.

Anyway, that´s what i believe.

maybe you're a young buck who hasn't been around long, preaching to the choir.

change doesn't happen overnight (although last night, a couple states passed mj reform laws, and a couple others legalized gay marraige), change on the national level will take more time. over the course of 8 years prior to the last four, we've had a president initiate two wars, driving our economy to the brink of collapse (2008 stock market crash). the 8 years before that, we had a president who is credited for creating the last GDP surplus since the mid 1970's.

unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), we don't have a "true democracy", where the working class self-governs. our system is built on representatives of the populace; and I'd much have a leader that leans on the socialist side than a corporate-raiding fascist.

And maybe not does it matter how old am I ? I do not preach really I only say how I feel about things. I do not claim that what I say a ultimate true. Obviously you have different opinion but that is ok I respect that.

By the way exactly 40 years ago today a great person with biggest heart on earth gave birth to me Smile

And I agree

If you look at the candidates to whom the spotlight was cast you will notice, none of them had much of a chance at defeating Obama, this was the point all along if you ask me. Shine the light on who you want to be seen and make sure those individuals have hardly a shot at winning. Were there acceptable candidates running? Perhaps, but you will never hear that guys opinion on cable t.v.

Exactly. nicely played. So basically they did not give people any choice did they ?

Vodsel wrote:

Nothing for me it is very clear my friend Smile

You get to chose from already chosen. Plus they chose it for you the way that you had not choice at all Smile Is not that really funny Very happy

I think its very disrespectful also but from this you can see how they look down on working hard people. They just think we are stupid sheep not able to think for them self anymore and in many cases they are actually right.

Is not that sad Sad

Yes, that's where's the difference between your perspective and the perspective of others in this thread. Technically we do have more than two options in elections, but the political mechanism (mostly to do with funding) brings the realistic number down, and the US is the prime example for that.

When people keep in mind that reality, and they are pragmatic, they often will vote by picking the lesser evil. That, compared to the bigger one, is good. With Obama, it's quite clear that for instance social policies will be less raped than with Romney, besides what happens with NSA, drones, etc.

Ok, I wrote a bunch of truisms... and I agree with you that it is sad, but it's good to keep in mind that it can be changed. It just takes a helluva lot of time. Big structures can only be changed slowly, piece by piece, like benzyme said, unless you blow the whole thing up. But since we need to keep using the building...

And a very Happy Birthday to your mom Smile
