I absolutely agree. I think the only difference is seperating what WE know as Christianity the religion of our day versus what the character JESUS actually DID.
Ever read the gnostic gospels? Having studied them a bit and comparing them with the Jesus of the canonical bible, I'm even more convinced that if Jesus did actually exist he was talking about a god much, much different then the god we commonly associate Christianity with today. Below are a few exerpts that, to me, resonate GREATLY with my own psychedelic understanding:
Jesus said, "If those who lead you say to you, 'See, the kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty."
And he said, "Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death."
Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter [the kingdom]."
Jesus said, "The Pharisees and the scholars have taken the keys of knowledge and have hidden them. They have not entered nor have they allowed those who want to enter to do so. As for you, be as sly as snakes and as simple as doves."
Jesus said, "Congratulations to those who are alone and chosen, for you will find the kingdom. For you have come from it, and you will return there again."
Jesus said, "If they say to you, 'Where have you come from?' say to them, 'We have come from the light, from the place where the light came into being by itself, established [itself], and appeared in their image.'
His disciples said to him, "When will the rest for the dead take place, and when will the new world come?"
He said to them, "What you are looking forward to has come, but you don't know it."
Jesus said to her, "I am the one who comes from what is whole. I was granted from the things of my Father."
Jesus said, "I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained. Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there."
These are just a few snippets from the Book of Thomas, found in the Nag Hammadi library in Egypt I forget how many years ago. Reading all of these supposed sayings of Jesus, am I the only one who can read between the lines here and think he is talking about stuff that we are exploring through psychedelics? It's an interesting theory to say the least.
