A thought,

Could it be that there is something in Yerba Mate that brings out latent HPPD?

I have personally never had any psycadelic effects, mental, body, or visual, and I have drank massive amounts of it at one point. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I don't get the above mentioned effects.

However, I love the stuff. It ranks up there with coca tea for me, but a bit better for stimulation without any crash. It's a very clean stimulation.

Also I want to point out that the grinds can be used 3-4 times (as is traditionally done), as a 1 brew does not get even 1/2 of the actives out, or so I have been told. The second cup seems stronger than the first, in taste, bitterness (before sugar) and strength.

caffein can be psycho-active in high amounts if you're not used to taking caffein.

Maté, strong coffee, guarana and cola-nut can all have mildly psychedelic effects.

The effects are closer to those of cocaine or amphetamine's than to those of genuine psychedelic's.

If i take a very strong cup of maté or coffee on an empty stomach i get a light-headed feeling, a tingling sensation all over my body ,some sort of visual enhancement, a pleasant sort of buzz in my head and thoughts flow more fluidly than normal.

This usually lasts for only a few minutes.

I love mate but I've never notice something psychedelic even mildly, I don't drink it all day on an empty stomach though... It's a valuable source of energy (less harsh than coffee in acidity and heartbrok'n'beats) as well as detoxifying herb to me.

It most certainly is. That's how it is in my dictionary, that's how it is in my encyclopedia, and that's how it is here:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/yerba+mate

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_maté

Also look at these products. It is spelled YERBA MATÉ in all of these. I think the font at the Nexus just makes it look funny, but it's spelled right.

This thread is making me want to drink larger amount to be able to vote... Psychedelic ? Sometimes I feel that the man is psychedelic by essence, the herbs are just here to channel this psychelism ...
I always have been asked silly questions when walking around with a bombilla, I remenber back in london, when stopping coffee after my ayurvedic treatment... AHha great fun that was.
But ron, you mentionned you have buy fresh bulk ? I buy it bulk to from the spice and herbals local store, do you mean freshly DRIED or fresh as fresh LIVING leaves and stems ??

Haha I think people know this but don't know how to type in accents. Can you tell us how to please? It does annoy me how I can't put accents on letters with my keyboard.

I've been drinking large quantities of Taragui brand Yerba Mate all day and it was fun at first but now I'm crashing from too much caffeine and feel horrible and agitated. Heightened awareness but nothing psychedelic.

Cocaine is more 'psychedelic' than yerba. And we all agree that cocaine is not a psychedelic. However, I'm not saying that there isn't something promising hiding in there, and I'm guessing this is why 69Ron is asking, and I look forward to hearing more from the extract maestro! Smile

Yeah the only way I've ever managed it is to cut and paste too. There must be a way to do it with your keyboard though...

The Nexus font makes it look funny, that's all.

See:

YERBA MATÉ

Code:
YERBA MATÉ

From Dictionary.com it is “yerba maté”. That’s a direct copy and paste. There's no way you can make it look right on the Nexus. I've tried. If you look at the images in my last post, there you can see the spelling I'm using. The font used in those products shows the accent better than the Nexus font does.

Aww I don't have a numeric keypad, it's a laptop so there's only the numbers along the top.

Hey the funny thing is, my Taragui packet spells it without the accent! Yet they've got two accents on the brand name Taragui (two horizontal dashes over the peaks of the u and one over the i) so I assume they're not just being lazy... maybe mate doesn't have an accent in Argentina?

My dictionary shows both "Yerba mate" and "Yerba maté" as being correct spellings.

Words are our servants, not our masters.

We all understand what we mean even we type "jerba Muatte" or "ierva mate" or whatever!

Mate definitely gives some good effects. I don't think it is the trace safrole in it, I've never even heard of that... must not be much in it because I know the taste of that shit Cool Anyways ya I chock it up to theobromine and b vitamins. Eat some real acai berries and you'll notice it's extremely similar to the head space provided by yerba... I shit you not.

I have B vitamins, I have pure theobromine, etc. I already know what those can do. In me, no amount of theobromine and B vitamins can produce those effects of altered hearing, euphoria, etc.

While it might not be the safrole, it is not the theobromine that's for sure.

a friend from argentina refers to it as 'jerba'

just weighed it- a typical gourd full (actually almost half) for me is 40g, refilling with warm water until it tastes really weak.

i have not noticed it being psychedelic on its own, but then again im certain it synergizes very well with cannabisWink

I do not think it is the eugenol or the safrole which are present in low amounts (do you have a source for their presence?) as you can't even smell them (and they have strong STRONG odors). Additional Eugenol is not really like mescaline, as phenethylamines require 3 methoxy-groups to be active eugenol has one and a hydroxy- in the 3,4 position. Additionally amphetamines can be active with a methylenedioxy- (3,4-MD-PEA is inactive). 3,4-dimethoxy is inactive as both the PEA and amphetamine. 3,5 is active as the amphetamine but not the PEA (2C-H). Interestingly 2,4,5-TMA (TMA-2) is very active but 2,4,5-TM-PEA is inactive (maybe active with an MAOI?). Anyway I think it is the caffeine type stimulants present and maybe some other unknown compounds responsible for the psychoactive effects.

Caffenine in high doses is not psychedelic. I have gotten violently sick off of caffeine pills once. There are reports of people hallucinating but these seem to be large overdoses although it seems to be amphetamine type psychosis rather than psychedelic. It is possible that some people are highly susceptible to some compound in the yerba maybe with MAOI properties? Isoquinolines?

Ron you do seem to have a hypersensitivity to psychoactives. You should have a friend do a placebo experiment with you. I have drinken yerba for years (although not recently) without anything but stimulant like effects. Never the less I am glad you brought it up, as I just brewed a cup its been a while. Should be interesting to look into its pharmacology a bit more.

I didn't have time to look into but at least on wiki there was some possibility of carcinogenicity with mate (yes I know the spelling...) conversely it has been found to have anti-cancer properties in some in vitro work? Although other factors could be involved, would have to look into the studies to see if proper controls were made. Some speculated the temperature of the drink played a role.

Loaded up my gourd with 35g and used warm instead of hot water. Been drinking it all day and haven't noticed anything unusual.

The effects are light, and might probably go unnoticed by many people. I think you are all getting the same effect I am getting, but you are not tuned in to it enough to notice it. It’s like how some people can smoke weed and not get high from it until they do it a few times and realize what the effects are.

The effects are light, even at very high doses, and easily overlooked. I think the poll numbers simply show that most people are not sensitive enough to notice the mild psychedelic effects it has.

We currently have 4 votes from people who notice it, and 8 from people who don't. The main effect is that of simulation from caffeine, theobromine, etc., and this might flood out the other effects for some people.

there is a something diff about yerba mate that sets it apart from green tea, cocoa and coffee for me..each once is different. Yerba mate has the clearest effects without any crash..similar to green tea but mate does feel more euphoric and less shaky than even green tea.

I wouldnt call it psychedelic..but a mildy stimulating and empathic euphoriant.
Long live the unwoke.
