Maybe you have already believed beforehand or whatnot, but who has had their concept of this world/reality completely shattered after doing these drugs? Who now believes in an after-life, or that this world isn't what it appears?

DMT has taught me to believe nothing but to endlessly ponder everything, including an after life, a before life, a life that's a dream and a dream that's a life.

There was life before me and there will be life after I die.

My consciousness, however, will cease the moment my brain stops functioning.

I, the person, am a probe, a satellite, quite dispensable and for the time being partly self recovering. I am used for a purpose I don't know anything about, probably for a reason Laughing

I have experienced what could maybe be described as past lives..from lives in ancient egypt to a young girl who lived on a farm with her grandfather(on more than one occasion) with psychedelics.

This resonates ... And as a side note, it is incredibly interesting to hear all of these baffling experiences people have had while clinically dead, before being resuscitated.

I'm just curious, why are you so certain?

I don't really know either way, but certainty of a position on this subject always puzzles me. I mean, we don't have a friggin clue what consciousness even is. So certainty seems unwarranted imo

Obviously there is no way to prove either way if there is life after death but I personally find it fun to speculate about the mystery.
I like a good mystery now and again, and I also like good suspense in a story..
My life is like my own personal story and it just doesn't get much more mysterious and suspenseful than contemplating death.

Whether there is an afterlife or not I would want to live life to the fullest because if there is an after life then I would not want to spend the rest of eternity regretting my actions in this life, and if there is no afterlife then I only get one shot at this thing, either way I believe that thinking about the idea of death is healthy and is a good motivator in life.

An uninteresting and rather dreary belief. Consistent with a materialist paradigm and shared by many.

DMT has shown me that ALL is belief, and that what awaits us, if anything, is likely beyond our present cognitive capacity to understand.

Finally, as I was once told “over there” – you can’t die if you never really existed in the first place!

Why is it dreary? My consciousness will cease... and move on to the next incarnation.

Nothing dreary about it. Just energy moving from one vessel to another.

Why the need to over-explain and romanticize things beyond this life? To me, that's uninteresting.

It's warranted.

I am a thinking thing. I think, therefore I am. When I stop thinking, I will no longer be a thinking thing... therefore my statement "My consciousness, however, will cease the moment my brain stops functioning." I find it useless romanticizing these things.

There is no solid proof that consciousness, or thought is localized. There are even physicists who believe the opposite..

There is no solid proof to the contrary.

There have been times where my consciousness is nearly tangible. It's nothing provable, but I really get the feeling that there is more to life and existence than merely machines. To me, the evolution of the universe is a cosmic wave of energy/consciousness and we are one expression of an infinite number.

If my psychedelic use has shown me anything, it is that things are far stranger than I ever could have imagined....or can imagine right now.

Since I feel like I have spoken to dead relatives while partaking I am forced to believe in an afterlife. Many leading scientific theories support the possibility of an after life existing. Also phenomena such as past life recall in children who can go to places they have never been in their current life but remember from past lives, and are able to remember people by name seems to support afterlife as well.

Check out Brian Weiss american psychiatrist and excellent scholar, he has delved deeply into the subjects of past life regression, future life progression, and life after death.

The non-locality of time at the quantum level seems very observable via dmt and other psychedelics. If theories about endogenous release of dmt at the moment of death correct this seems like the gateway for your consciousness to travel through. I experience death I feel like most times I partake. Anyways this is all just speculation, but to me although the science isn't concrete on this matter I feel that it is the probable truth.

We do know a few things about consciousness.

1. It is influenced by sensory input from the 5 senses and is thus a receiver of consciousness.
2. Every meditator eventually has to admit that the mind is a completely fluid thing. Thus the phrase "mind-stream".
3. When the body dies at a bare minimum all influence the brain has on consciousness will come to a halt as the brain decomposes.

because of point #3 I tend to agree with a1pha to a degree here. I don't think any part of the ego 'joedirt' survives death at all. I think the sense of self (or inner story line) is largely a brain based cognitive function.

What seems much more important to me is not the consciousness of joedirt, but the part of me that can in fact observe this stream of consciousness. What is this awareness??? That is what I think survives death. This is what I think I have tapped into on rare few occasions when my consciousness expands and the ego pops like a balloon. Awareness is ALWAYS there even when joe's ego isn't.

So I agree with a1pha. I think consciousness, as most people refer to it, does indeed come to an end when meat body dies. However that doesn't mean that awareness becomes devoid of experience...but it certainly becomes devoid of brain based experience.

BTW Saying 'I' am a thinking being implies something solid and tangible that does thinking.
What is the source of this 'I' and is it really any more/less important than any other thought?

no offence to anyone cus this is directed at myself also..but these threads often remind me of a bunch of people masterbating in a circle..with each person awaiting their own turn. We end end up with a lot of analytical babbling but I have really not ever gone away with a feeling that I gained anything from reading or participating in these discussions.

One persons experience is not going to be anothers..So there is little point in discounting much of anything unless you have the experience to discount yourself.

Well said.

For me it's like fishing. I rarely find something new, but man, sometimes someone drops something profound and thought provoking. So, Like fishing, I wait, and occasionally get a bite!

The fact is, no one knows if there's a life after this one for sure. It should be that way! Life would probably suck ass if there were no great mysteries.
