^yes..but is it nearly as bad as smoking toxic cigarettes?..I would be very worried about the added toxnis in gov cigarettes and the fibergalss particles in the filters. I dont think tobacco is going to cause problems with the ammount I use it..I smoke tobacco maybe 6 times a year. I love to smoke cigars with mushrooms and ayahuasca..not alot though just a pew puffs. I like the way it interacts. I also found a very useful medicinal use for it..I grind my teeth and clench my jaw alot..I dont know why but I used to have teeth aches and jaw tension alot from it..I am more aware of it now so it doesnt happen as much but I read that tobacco was used traditionally for this type of pain..so one day when it was bothing me I smoked some tobacco and it really did work..it worked very very well. I want to get some mapacho now or even grow some. Otts work with nicotine as well interests me..though I dont think I would ever use it that often or use pure nicotine.. Long live the unwoke.

I love mapacho for so many reasons. I don't care if it's killing me slowly just like everything else I'm immersed in on this planet. The little death that I exhale's a window to what has died. Easiest plant I've ever grown.

Mapacho , Nicotiana Rustica : Quote:Growing in the rainforest it contains up to twenty times more nicotine than common North American varieties such as N. tabacum. Food of the Gods wrote:
SHAMANIC TOBACCOS Tobacco smoking was widespread in North America at the time of the European contact. While the habit of taking hallucinogenic DMT-containing snuffs was also prevalent in the Caribbean cultural area, there are no confirmed reports of materials other than tobacco being smoked. The high culture of the Maya that flourished until the mid-800s in Mesoamerica had an old and complex relationship with tobacco and the habit of smoking it. The tobacco of the Classical Maya was Nicotiana rustica, which is still in use among aboriginal populations in South America today. This species is much more potent, chemically complex, and potentially hallucinogenic than the commercial grades of Nicotiana tabacum available today. The difference between this tobacco and cigarette tobacco is profound. This wild tobacco was cured and rolled into cigars which were smoked. The trancelike state that followed, partially synergized by the presence of compounds that included MAO inhibitors, was central to the shamanism of the Maya. Recently introduced antidepressants of the MAO inhibitor type are distant synthetic relatives of these natural compounds. Francis Robicsek has published extensively on the Mayan fascination with tobacco and its chemical complexity: It also must be recognized that nicotine is by no means the only bioactive substance in the tobacco leaf. Recently alkaloids of the harmala group, harman and norharman, have been isolated from cured commercial tobaccos and their smoke. They constitute a chemical group of beta-carbolines, which include harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine, and 6-methoxy harmine, all with hallucinogenic properties. While to date no native varieties of tobacco have been analyzed for these substances, it is a reasonable supposition that their composition may vary widely, depending upon the variety and growth, and that some of the native-grown tobaccos may contain a relatively high concentration of them.8 Tobacco was and is the ever-present adjunct of the more powerful and visionary hallucinogenic plants wherever in the Americas they are used in a traditional and shamanic way. And one of the traditional uses of tobacco involved the New World's invention of the first enemas. Peter Furst has researched the role of enemas and clysters in Mesoamerican medicine and shamanism: It has only recently come to light that the ancient Maya like the ancient Peruvians employed enemas. Enema syringes or narcotic clysters, and even enema rituals, were discovered to be represented in Maya art, an outstanding example being a large painted vase dating A.D. 600-800, on which a man is depicted carrying an enema syringe, applying an enema to himself, and having a woman apply it to him. As a result of this newly discovered scene, archaeologist M. D. Coe was able to identify a curious object held by a jaguar deity on another painted Maya vessel as an enema syringe. If the enemas of the ancient Maya were, like those of the Peruvian Indians, intoxicating or hallucinogenic, they might have consisted of fermented balche (honey mead). Balche is a very sacred beverage and it may have been fortified with tobacco or with morning-glory seed infusions. Datura infusions and even hallucinogenic mushrooms may have been taken in this way. Of course they could also have used a tobacco infusion alone.
Had he more quickly realized just who they were,he would have shown them more respect.Had he tried harder to fathom their brilliant minds,he would have taken more of their teachings to heart.Had he more clearly understood the purpose of their being, he would have more vigorously tried to assist them. They were truly honorable; he was sadly prejudiced. this is facinating.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn8Dw4rmtD0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxVy8E-IE34I am getting more and more interesting in tobacco as a healing plant..there is all this negative stuff out there relating to it..about it's health effetcs..when real organic tobacco is used for healing. I want to try making a weak tea with mapacho to sniff occasionally to clear out my sinus cavity..I get lots of sinus infections..not as much as Iused to though becasue I eat better, and I have been sniffing a white sag, mugwort and sea salt tea occasionally..mapacho sounds great though. I also want to drink some mapacho tea..a very weak tea for the healing pugative effects. Funny how they never talk about tobacco in my herbology courses..they cover all these native americal herbs but noone wants to touch tobacco. Long live the unwoke.

They are taken out of commerical tobacco of course and only trace amounts are left...but yes, tobacco does contain harmala alkaloids and Mapacho contins a lot more than unprocessed commerical tobacco (nicotinana bigbucksorum). However, you are right that those are not the correct beta-carbolines that occur in tobacco. I thought Harmol was the predominate harmala alkaloid in tobacco. Also, it is VERY easy to smoke too much Mapacho and get nicotien poisening. I added a few grams to a bowl of shisha I was smoking and by the end of the bowl I was green and sick as hell to my stomach....and I'm a daily smoker. So just as a warning, anyone that does not smoke really should go very easy on Mapacho, it is STRONG. Strong enough to make most people light headed after a few strong puffs. It is good stuff though. I can easily see how a normally non-smoker could use this as a sacrament. I always use Mapacho whenver I brew Aya. A leaf or two usually ends up in the brew as well (I usually brew very large batches, so this is like 1 leaf for 10 doses). It is traditionally used to ward off evil energies/spirits and to purify. Currandero's use this stuff for just about everything. It is not uncommon to have Mupacho smoke blown on when visiting a Currandero and during any cerimonies that you participate in. I really wonder about the actual harmaloid percentage in various Mapacho Plants . Maybe one could get seeds of a decent strain from south america . I think i will import some ... Cigarettes make me vomit , very fast . I am interested if one could precipitate the Harmaloids and use the Bulk nicotine as an insecticide . Working with tobacco extracts is very dangerous. Nicotine is a very potent poison.
I agree tobacco does have some interesting properties but its not something that should be used for medicine. There are much safer alternatives.

A sun/moon tea of mapacho drunk up the nose with a tiny sea shell (known as Singado in amazoniam shamanism) before, during, and after drinking ayahuasca is an incredible way to work with this plant!
I DO NOT recommend doing this if you have no idea what you are doing, as it can be very intense.
but ah...the clarity! ;]
Am I the only one here that does this???
