Hey guys,

I'd like to share my results with you from my second extraction and also get some opinions on the Re-X. I was following Vovin's tek with 100g MHRB. The final yield was 0.921g, however, I was an idiot during the final stages and spilled about 1/4 of the product while it was in the heptane so it would have been closer to 1.2.

During the pulls, the naptha was crystal clear. So much so that I thought I must have messed something up and there was no spice in it. However, after removing from the freezer and scraping I was pleasantly surprised to find some amazing white fluffy crystals.

I was very happy with the result. I don't even think it needed a re-x, but I decided to do it anyway. I figured that it couldn't hurt and maybe I could get some bigger crystals. So I melted it in heptane and let it cool in a 25 ml beaker. I did remove a very little yellow sludge from the bottom before cooling it. Then to the fridge, then the freeze for 24 hours. Tonight I removed it and collected the goods. To my surprise, the product now had a more yellow tint to it. Well, not exactly yellow, but more off white. It was surprising since it was previously a bright white.

So the question it. Why the change in color? Is it because the crystals are just more tightly formed or something or could it be due to some impurities in my heptane? I noticed that while the weight is pretty much the same, the amount of product looks much smaller.

The product still looks great, but I would love to know what happened. Would it be worth dissolving in naptha again and scraping it, similar to the initial pull or just leave it as is?

Thanks!

Jibbs

Hey!

My guess is that it's simply DMT polymorphism, in other words, even pure DMT can be yellow too, you probably have nothing to worry about. If you are worried about your solvent, be sure to do an evap test first.

Here's a relevant thread:

Thanks for the reply. I'm not too worried about the color. My last batch was much more yellow and it was amazing. I just found ti very odd that a simple re-x would cause it to go from pure white to a yellowish white. I was under the impression that a re-x would usually make it whiter.

I think the re-x was not needed in this case and I probably should have just left it. I don't know though. Is it always good to do a re-x regardless?

Hi jibbs, in the re-x process, did you heat the solvent containing the spice?
I'm having a hunch that a too warm heating might shift the spice toward another polyform.

What might also be the case is that your DMT was already slightly yellow, when crystals are very small they diffract light in such a way that they appear white. Once the crystals grow bigger, as in after the re-x, you start to see the yellow coming through. That is also why they weigh the same but appear to be less, they are denser.

One way to check this is to take some of the white fluffy crystals, and allow them to melt into a droplet, the oil will be colorless, if the DMT is truly white, or it will be pale yellow.

Of course, the yellow colour is nothing to worry about, the DMT is pure for all intents and purposes.

And also on that note, DMT will oxidize and yellow much faster when it's dissolved in a solvent, or melted into an oil, so take note of that as well.

Yes, I did heat it. I followed some steps on here that said to warm the heptane and also put the dmt into a flask and warm it until it begins to melt. Then start adding the warm heptane, keeping on the heat until it's all melted. Maybe I used too much heat? I am using a hot plate to do it.

I was thinking the same regarding the larger crystals. The initial stuff was so white though, that I am beginning to suspect that isn't the case, but who knows.

I don't have the fluffy white anymore, but I am going to do another extraction following the same tek, starting tonight, so I will try it out when I am done.

The only thing I'm not sure of now is if I should even bother with the re-x for the next batch, if it comes out the same.

Ok, so last night I decided to recrystalize it again, but this time in naptha to rule out the heptane. I freeze precipitated it in a glass dish rather than beaker. The results were interesting. It is back to its white color, though not as white as it originally was. The odd part was the way it crystalized though. Instead of forming noticable crystals on the dish, like in my first pic, it a file along the whole surface of the dish. It lookedlike frosted glass kind of. After scraping it I had the white powdery result seen below. The crystals are very, very fine and resembles more of a powder that the previous crystally look.

That being said, guess I am still unsure if it was the heptane or the crystalization method and I'm hesitant to do another test with it. However, is there any benefit to recrystalizing it again and trying to get larger crystals, even if just the normal size seen in from the first scraping, or it is just as good having it fine / powdery?

One thing to note about the heptane is that I recall pouring the heptane from my previous extraction's recrystalization back into the heptane container. That extraction was a different tek and was very crude at first and stayed pretty yellow. Perhaps that contaminated the heptane? That is what I am thinking at this point.

On a side note, I just got my membership promoted ! woot woot!
