I've never noticed music directing visuals for me, but it certainly directs emotion as well as the tone or energy of the trip. I like it just for those effects, as well as giving me an anchor. At times, when tripping really hard, I've got totally lost without music.
I don't personally tend to do tribal or traditional, I actually like gentle melodic rock and symphonic metal [for people of similar proclivities I would suggest investigating Within Temptation and Beyond The Black, possibly Xandria]. The 'right' music is very much up to the individual, I'd just add that its very helpful to try and use music that is very gentle on you. Music that you don't need psychological defenses to listen to.
The last time I tripped I took a large dose of mescaline along with large doses of harmine and THH and as all three peaked at the same time I smoked DMT. Just then, when I inhaled the DMT, the playlist I had going ended and my favorite thrash metal band started up. This is the girl that keeps me going when I'm lifting weights! It was too much and I had to crawl across the room in the dark while tripping my ass off to poke next on my MP3 player
So my answer would be something gentle that you like, and would produce the right emotional tone.
