I have long used various kinds of ginseng for energy, physical stamina, and sexual enhancement. But I read somewhere recently that Siberian ginseng is also an MAOI containing substance.
I am very curious about the possibility of taking a large (but safe) dose of it after fasting for a day (and of course avoiding all stimulants and other drugs), then smoking dmt.

I am thinking that the properties of improved mental activity and sexual stimulation, combined with the MOAI effects, will mean the ginseng give the dmt trip greater longevity, improved clarity and possibly greater sexual titillation....

So an experiment with this is bound ensure in our house in the next few weeks and i am happy to post on the results. But if anyone has any experience with that combo already, i would keen to hear about it.

Different substances require vastly different amounts to be consumed to reach full inhibition.

I think Passionflower is only 1/32 as potent as Caapi, for example (and Rue is stronger than Caapi). So, I have no idea where Ginseng falls on the list.

If you are not taking anything else that would make a dangerous combination with MAOIs, you could always report back and let us know how it goes!

I have heard stories of Cacao potentiating Jurema tea, as well...
Some things will come easy, some will be a test

Never heard of ginseng being used as an MAOI inhibitor....swim just usually uses B. Caapi vine as his main MAOI when making an oral concaction....

What puts me off Caapi is the nauseating effects most people report, and what attracts me to ginseng is its sharpening, engergising and sexualising effects. I also know that it agrees with me, my body does well on it and it is easy to source. It is certainly an MAOI substance but i am just not sure about the concentration and hence necessary dosage.

Siberian ginseng is not ginseng but "Taiga root".

Yes, I am referring to Eleutherococcus senticosus, not properly a ginseng at all but commonly called (ie. sold as) Siberian ginseng.

Perhaps someone with chemistry knowledge could clarify something about MAOIs - how are those effects actually measured? - it seems only by pharmacological observation. All the scientific articles about MAO inhibitors suggest there is a massive list of substances with these effects but mostly they are not clinically studied.

What does it mean exactly to say that one MAOI substance has 1/32 the strength of another?

These are usually rough (gu)estimates. They refer to their content of active principles (e.g. MAOIs) so for instance one can say e.g. syrian rue with 4% alkaloids is 8 times stronger than caapi with 0.5% alkaloids.

But it can be also from subjective experience, e.g you need 3g of rue or 30g of caapi so rue is 10 times as strong as caapi.

Of course all these numbers I said are pretty rough and often down to personal experimentation. I think that the (correct me if wrong please!) person who claimed that Passionflower is only 1/32 as potent as Caapi based it on alkaloid content rather than actual experience. The latter would imply that this person tried (or heard about trying) a dose of 960g of passion flower (=same strength of 30g caapi) for oral dmt. This is an insane and very likely vary toxic amount of plant material for one to consume.

That is really very helpful clarification Infundibulum. Many thanks.
It does seem from the sloppy research I have been doing that there are a LOT of herbs that have probable MAOI activity determined from observation of their effects more generally speaking, but via what chemical process nobody is sure, and so whether they do potentate tryptamines is speculative and would need either detailed chemical research OR experimentation to get an answer to that. Would that be an accurate account of things?

A bit off topic, but for me panax Ginseng blocks the effects of DMT. I was so disappointed, DMT effects where suddenly gone. After a long search I read about Panax Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba, apparently blocking DMT. After three days DMT was working again, but I'm still having very weak visuals compared to the bright and vivid visuals from before.

Update after more than a year. Ginseng doesn't really affect the effects of DMT. I don't know what happened then. But nowadays the combination is fine.
