I'm curious how and why so much spam is appearing in the forum. Never seen it before and now its almost daily. Does this indicate some lapse in maintenance or security on the part of administration?

I believe that the same person that was spamming with Xanax purchasing sites two weeks ago posted the new spam threads today. Even if he isn't, I don't think it's a problem with security. You can't possibly know what people register in the Nexus.

One way of dealing with that would be to not allow new members to post in the forum at all before they've submitted the entire questionnaire, and even then if they're persistent enough they can spend 20 minutes answering the questionnaire and proceed to post their spam threads. That could also rule out any legit members that have a short fuse and lack of patience and want to just come, ask their question and leave.

As popularity grows it's bound that we'll have such people more and more often. Whether there is an adequate way to deal with that or not, we must leave to Trav and the mods to decide.

It's partly to do with opening registration to any time, whereas before it was restricted to the weekends only.

The question is to a large extent whether the mods are happy with this ongoing game of whack-a-mole, and whether we need to apply further tactics to minimise this kind of annoyance, which I feel rather detracts from the forum.

Trav has some things in place to help lessen the brunt of these things. It's not full or near perfect, never will be. Will always be cat and mouse unfortunately. All good though. Not a huge deal as far as security goes tbh. Just don't click on them when they show up (and don't hover your cursor over the links).

I've noticed that they always seem to be selling stuff that is'nt even interesting from a psychonautic point of view. Sleeping pills, viagra, xanax.

They don't seem to realise that in spite of all their desperate efforts, they've probably never sold a single item to anyone here.

I really don't think there's a person behind. Bots become better and better, and once it found a forum, where it can register, it will try again and again.

The standard captchas are basically useless with modern bots with Neuronal networks. They can solve all standard questions better than most humans...

Maybe a good idea would be to have a 12-48 hour wait purgatory time after creatingn an account before you are allowed to post .. doesnt bother me much anyways though.

If i would wanted to sell xanax, i would go to anxiety-related forums. For sleeping pills i would go to insomnia forums or sites that are especially being visited at night. And for selling viagra, i would go to sites for pensioners or people with medical problems like low blood pressure.

The logic seems to be "DMT=drugs=pills...these people want pills, any pills".

Yeah it's pretty stupid they're even spending the time to do it.

A bot really doesn't care about the specific audience. It just tries to find forums and then to register there, and post its spam. Any intelligence to detect the specific audience of the forum is useless. In the worst case, noone will buy anything. A bot doesn't care about the seconds he needed...
