How come people often measure cactus dosages in inches or feet when the diameter of the cactus could be anywhere from 2 inches to 7 inches? Seems to me the variability is too great to be comparing/discussing dosages online in that format.

Yes, it makes no sense to measure in length, I never understood why people do that without talking about the diameter too.

In the cact analysis thread's first post I quoted two experiments showing a 1 foot (30cm) cact cutting can have a huge difference depending on thickness, one turned out with 20 dried grams and the other with 40 dried grams.

Not sure but it probably just carried over from the business aspect of selling cacti since 1 foot seems to be a common “unit” of measurment for that purpose. I’m trying to think of something else we tend to spitball in terms of measurment. Even mushrooms are in grams and not like “I ate a combined 14 inches stacked”.

I was wondering why people doing this all the time. I could imagine that it might make more sense in areas where you have access to mature cacti which are more similar in diameter.

Also it is bugging me when people don't differentiate between dry and wet as well as skin and whole or material with removed core.
