This has always happened.
In 98-99 one of my friends at the time started one of the first companies importing plant matter from south america for "our usage."

I was quiet when he imported Psychotria, caapi, tobacco, etc.... but when he started importing massive amounts of virola bark, I asked him to find out about the harvesting. He was told it was ethical. I wanted more investigation done as I do not see how 1000lbs of tree bark can be ethical. No info emerged.

Years later, we saw pictures of trees that died after having the bark stripped, and really old trees dead and littering the jungle.

Thus why I was pushing the "grow your own" and trying to provide everyone with plantlets.
"We're selling more than a cracker here," Krijak said. "We're selling the salty, unctuous illusion of happiness."

STS is a community for people interested in growing, preserving and researching botanical species, particularly those with remarkable therapeutic and/or psychoactive properties.

I feel the same Ringworm.
It's definitely the way, not only to prevent degradation, but also the direct contact with the plant ads to the experience.

Smoalk Moar? Wut? Stop Thumbs down Shocked Crying or very sad Wut? Surprised Laughing
'"ALAS,"said the mouse, "the world is growing smaller every day. At the
beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad
when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have
narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner
stands the trap that I must run into." "You only need to change your direction," said
the cat, and ate it up.' --Franz Kafka

Jurema tree is considered aa a plague in the hinterland of the northeast. It is common for farmers to hire tractors to uproot trees to prepare the soil for cultivation or build roads, it's also a major source for charcoal production.
