A friend has been using a home made ethanol extract of St. John's Wort (SJW) quite successfully to manage his depression and anxiety.

He plans to take ayahuasca and would like to know how many days before its use, should he discontinue the use of his SJW extract. This to avoid any potential problems, since ayahuasca is a MAOi and antidepressant use is contraindicated.

According to his estimates it would suffice 10-14 days, but he would like to check with you to make sure.

According to his sources the terminal half-life is as follows:

Hypericin: Oral administration peak concentration at approximately 2 hours, elimination half-life approximately 25 hours. Steady state concentrations with three times a daily dosing occurred by day 4. Terminal half-life is 42 hours.

Hyperforin: Oral administration peak concentration occurred at approximately 3.5 hours. Elimination half-life is approximately 9 hours. Steady state concentration with 300 mg St. John's wort (standardized to 14.8 mg hyperforin) equal to 100 ng/ml.

Pseudohypericin: Oral administration peak concentration at approximately 30 minutes. Terminal half-life is approximately 23 hours.

This is a sentence I picked up from another forum, someone had same question:
Quote:
Two weeks is exactly what is recommended for coming off a long SJW regimen.

Some seem to have withdrawal symptoms and/or need tapering off, others not.
