I was reading around on the website for "Orange Sunshine - The Story of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love", a movie being made about the Brotherhood of Eternal Love's LSD empire & how it all-came-a-tumblin-down.

I was reading the background story about one of the members..."Thumper"...and read this quote:
Quote:
One of the founding members of the Brotherhood wasn't indicted: John Griggs, an Anaheim-raised hippie who worshiped Leary and hoped to install him as a prophet on a church-owned island. By the time the convictions came in, Griggs was gone, dead from an overdose of psilocybin in 1969.

I've never heard about a psilocybin overdose.

Have any of you?
Or does anyone know anything about the possibilities of this?

Here is the page I started from at the "Orange Sunshine" site, I hit the "read more" button & it took me to the full story at "ocweekly.com"
Here is a link to the doc at "ocweekly.com.
The quote I'm curious about is in the first paragraph of the second page.
I'm gonna go back & see if there is a bio of John Griggs that I can read & see if it has any more detail about his psilocybin OD.

I had read about this also, in some book about the brotherhood of eternal love.. He had dosed massively by mistake, forgot the numbers.. There was some story that he appeared in distress in the visions of someone who was tripping somewhere else, and when they came to check on him he was dead

wonder if its true

However by the summer of 1969 cracks were starting to appear: Griggs died after an overdose of PCP and a teenage friend of Timothy Learyโ€™s daughter was found drowned in a pond at the Brotherhood commune with traces of LSD in her system. Members of the Brotherhood were jailed on marijuana charges. After Griggsโ€™ death the approach to distribution became more competitive and less focused on the founding sentiments of the church. Additionally, the supply of Orange Sunshine LSD was dwindling and they had lost their contacts for raw materials.

No sure seems to be some conflicting stories like this. Looks like a hell of a story.Rolling eyes

Wonder how much is really true.

Nobody overdoses on psilocybin, that is bullshit.

Sounds like he killed himself by doing to much PCP... now that WILL kill you!

maybe it was misheard as "PCB" and then extrapolated to be psilocybin

That does make some seance....
Or I was thinking it was not actually psilocybin, but a poisonous variety of mushroom that did it.
Although, these guys seem a bit experienced for that kind of idiocy.

Anyone truely familiar with the pharmacology of psilocybin & the human body, know for sure if it is even possible or not, to OD from it?
Anyone know the actual LD50?

Not speculations but actual facts?
I can guess & theorize on my own, anyone know the facts?

Cheers,

The toxicity of psilocybin is low; in rats, the oral LD50 is 280 mg/kg, approximately one and a half times that of caffeine. When administered intravenously in rabbits, psilocybin's LD50 is approximately 12.5 mg/kg[45] (however rabbits are extremely intolerant to the effects of most psychoactive drugs). The lethal dose from psilocybin toxicity alone is unknown at recreational or medicinal levels, and has never been documented; a 2008 case report noted "Death from psilocybin intake alone is unknown at recreational or medicinal levels."[46] Psilocybin makes up roughly 1% of the weight of Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, and so nearly 1.7 kilograms of dried mushrooms, or 17 kilograms of fresh mushrooms, would be required for a 60 kg person to reach the 280 mg/kg LD50 rate of rats.

Ya I wouldn't believe any of this. I remember reading a book about how the lead singer of rolling stones smoked dmt, a drug so powerful that it induces cerebral hemorrhages

i've found this link at the shroomery:

http://www.shroomery.org...n-overdose-of-psilocybin

quote
' * The LD50 for Psilocybin: From the Merck Index 12th Edition
o LD50 285 mg/kg i.v.(mice)
o LD50 280 mg/kg i.v. (rats)
o LD50 12.5 mg/kg i.v.(rabbits)
.....
'Thus we've determined that using the data for rats and accepting a median of 1% potency, that it would require the consumption of 1680g of mushrooms to reach the LD50 for a 60kg rat. This amount of mushrooms is enough to provide a "normal" mushroom trip to roughly 650 people.'

'Some things to keep in mind: Not all data can be extrapolated from rats to humans, but this common practice and generally accepted. Note that the LD50 incorporates route of administration. Therefore our answer of 1680g of mushrooms or 1.68kg of mushrooms is likely an underestimation of the oral dose required to kill a 60kg rat. '

if this is viable it seems very unlikely to me that an experienced psychonaut OD's from mushrooms...

Psilocybin is an anti-coagulant like aspirin at high doses so be careful with it.

SWIM once took about 250 milligrams of psilocybin by mistake. It was a horrible experience and caused minor internal bleeding. The following day he had purple marks here and there from broken blood vessels below the skin.

Wow, 250 mg Psilocybin? That will be roughly 20 grams dried Cubensis... Seriously? How was the trip?
