So can I do a re-x with xylene? I believe it was pulled originally with Heptane. But I have xylene will this do the job?

No. The solubility of DMT in xylene is too great for it to be of much use as a recrystallisation solvent. “There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work." ― Jacques Bergier, quoting Fulcanelli

Since you suspect that heptane was used originally your options are kind of limited. If original solvent was poor quality then re-xing using a high grade solvent may help. Low boiling, straight chain, saturated hydrocarbons are pretty much standard for DMT freebase recrystallisations. OP, sounds like using the solvents in the opposite sequence would be preferable “There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. Anything with less C is a gas so no go. Never seen anyone using pentane as a solvent though for some reason. Too volatile or low solubility perhaps...? No clue.
