pure dmt is white to nearly transparent, so if you smoked something darker and tar-like it means it contained other things appart from dmt, which can be plant oils, fats, other impurities (possibly solvent remains and what not) and/or other alkaloids such as dmt n-oxide, jungle spice, etc. I wouldnt recommend smoking some tar-like unknown substance supposedly being dmt from someone else, unless you know very well that person and how he did it. Better make it yourself.
the fact that one uses leaves from psychotria viridis makes it more likely to contain a bigger amount of dmt n-oxide, which is a gooey yellow product that does not crystalize. Also important to notice is that n-oxide is not soluble in naphtha, so if your solvent used is naphtha possibly you will get low yields.
So to extract from psychotria viridis, theoretically one should do an A/B with defats (with xylene/toluene or maybe better limonene), and then extract with one of the mentioned solvents.. But remember you wont get pure white crystals like this, more like some gooey substance... For white crystals from chacruna you would have to do a Zinc oxide conversion (which turns dmt n-oxide to dmt), and recrystalize with naphtha/heptane/hexane. Search around and you will find this conversion in the forum, or otherwise keep asking questions here
(this is all theoretical, though, SWIM never extracted from chacruna, only from mimosa, so maybe someone else can give better advice with experience, but Im reasonably sure that what I said is correct)
