I've always used a pyrex glass dish for my freeze precipitations but I've read a few teks that use wide-mouth mason jars for the freeze precipitation stage. I'm wondering if there is an advantage to using jars over a dish or if it is just personal preference? It seems like it would be difficult to scape the product from a jar imo.

That is exactly right, mason jars are very hard to scrape from. Flat glass dishes are much easier to deal with.
There may be some reason to use mason jars for freeze precipitation, but I don't know what it would be.

My thinking would be growing larger crystals would be better accomplished in a mason jar where the solvent is kept closer together where a pyrex dish would give you more smaller scattered crystals. Both equally efficient in the end, some folks just like nice big crystals. I could be wrong though, it could be as simple as using whatever you have around at the time when you need it.

Random question. In second grade science class I "documented" crystal growth with jars of sugar water that had paper clips suspended in the water. The crystals grew on the paper clips of course. I've recently heard the term "seed crystal" which I'm guessing accomplishes the same thing. Has anyone experimented in hanging different objects in saturated solution to see if one thing would work better at encouraging crystal growth than another? I bet it would work, and provide more surface area for your crystals to grab onto and grow easier.

(I got first place for my sugar crystal project Thumbs up )

Woah, that is actually a really interesting idea I may try that with my next extraction, put half my pulls in a mason jar with something suspended in it and the other half in a control jar with nothing and compare the results.
