I tried this tek in the past and encountered emulsions toward the end. re-read the instructions, and opted for no shaking during any part of the tek, mixed naphtha for defat, and mixed toluol for water layer base extraction, got another emulsion. my ph was 8.75-8.85, recently calibrated, accurate meter with temp control and bluelab probe, in the notes it said to use a stir stick, I used a spoon and was mindful to not stir it too aggressively but I guess I did that wrong. When I mix it next time should I very delicately ladel the water into the toluene and let it fall back into the water layer, I'm sorry, but ive gotten emulsions with this tek, its ridiculous. Its like it just doesn't want to go into the toluene. Or could this possibly be other ergot alkaloids (ergomethyrine etc.) also when I defatted my water with naphtha I was able to separate layers successfully, no remaining naphtha on water layer, but the water did have a slight naphtha smell to it. I know that hydrocarbons and other petro chemicals are slightly miscible in water, toluene is at 500mg p/L of water. is naphtha soluble at all, would this explain the smell. next time should I just invest in some glass stir sticks, but even then could I get some advice on stirring? last time I got an emulsion it stuck around the side of the jar, kind of a whitish yellow foam, but when it went back into the water I could see that it was tiny little particles, after they fully dispersed it formed a colloid, even if I carefully stirred it didn't want to go into the toluene, the layer it formed would lap over into the toluene but wasn't dissolving into it. Also my toluene is lab grade, from a chem company 99.7% pure.
