I am in a strange situation at the moment...

I have a friend who sold his soul in order to be a great musician and his skills have improved immensely. He has surpassed myself and other musician friends who have played for years yet he has just started playing an instrument last year; me and my friends have been playing for years.

There is obviously some force here at play, and right now I am somewhat tempted to do the same as he. I have experienced an ayahuasca session so I have encountered what hell is and I know it is a bad place to be, but its more of a purgatory state to cleanse you for your next life right? So pretty much everyone goes to hell anyways when they die.

After some thought and online research which won't really turn up any good answers, I figured it's best to turn to this community since people here are more aware of things behind the curtain.

What is your opinion on the matter? If someone were to sell their soul do they remain trapped in hell and never move on?

On a side note, since everything is contained within you.. shouldn't I be able to perform the same act as he does without making a pact? Let me know what you guys think...

Paulo Coehlo talks about his experience with a similar situation in the beginning of one of his books. Very scary stuff.

If you love music (and I'm assuming you do),

forget all that sh*t and just jam, man...

what else could there be to do?

Practise makes perfect, if u love it with dedication.
Build your own dream or some one else will hire you to build theirs..

There's only one way to become a better musician and that's practice . It's not glamorous , it takes patience and discipline. It's pretty straightforward actually .

Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads. I don't believe Robert Johnson sold his soul nor do I believe your friend's story. Personally I think it is superstitious thinking and not healthy.

It has always somewhat bothered me how some novice players can play guitar so much better than me. I have been playing for ten years and I often meet novice players that excel much faster than I ever could. Some people just have natural talent and determination. I admit being a bit envious but never suspected the devil was involved.

We all have our talents.

What a bizarre question and ridiculous assumption.

Have you considered the possibility that your friend is just more talented than you are? Or that he has put forth more of a sustained effort (albeit in a shorter time frame) than you have? People also tend to develop all kinds of skills at their own individual paces - so whether he's working harder, practicing more or just has more innate ability than you do, his superiority is likely the result of something other than Satanic intervention (which I can't even type without smirking, to be honest).

If you're looking to improve, my advice would be to just shut up and play - because what goes on behind the curtain can be boiled down pretty much to two simple words; TIME and EFFORT. Work harder, practice longer, forget the nonsensical hocus pocus and just focus on achieving YOUR full potential. If he's still better than you after that, it's probably because he's just better than you - but whatever, really... somebody's always going to be. There's 7 billion people on the planet.

Learning to play, and just playing for hours on end are actually what I enjoy about music, sometimes it's a technical challenge that keeps your trying until you succeed, other times it's relaxation or recreation, I honestly just love the music. It really doesn't matter if I'm the best or if I'm the worst, it's always one of the joys in life which always brightens my day...

what makes you desire this instant ability? Is it a love and dedication to music? is it because you have other desires you think it would fulfill?

And I feel by becoming instantly good you would be cheating yourself out of the heart of what playing an instrument is, you build a relationship with your instrument over time, sometimes it can make you feel amazing, other times it can be incredibly frustrating, but its all part of what learning an instrument is all about.

Can you sell your soul? Somehow I doubt it...

I see a soul as the conscious-being that transcends your physical incarnation(s), how can that be bought or sold?

I wanted to elaborate more, but somehow I'm doubting the seriousness of this thread...

Some insights regarding desire:

Quote:

For example, in the first discourse of the Buddha, the Buddha identified tanha as the principal cause of suffering.

Taṇhā is a Pāli word, related to the Vedic Sanskrit word tṛṣṇā and tarśa, which means "thirst, desire, wish". It is an important concept in Buddhism, referring to "thirst, desire, longing, greed", either physical or mental.[1][2] It is typically translated as craving,[3] and is of three types: kama-tanha (craving for sensual pleasures), bhava-tanha (craving for existence), and vibhava-tanha (craving for non-existence).

The Buddha identified three types of taṇhā

Kama-tanha (sensual pleasures craving):[5] craving for sense objects which provide pleasant feeling, or craving for sensory pleasures.[15] Walpola Rahula states that tanha includes not only desire for sense-pleasures, wealth and power, but also "desire for, and attachment to, ideas and ideals, views, opinions, theories, conceptions and beliefs (dhamma-taṇhā)."[7]
Bhava-tanha (craving for being):[5] craving to be something, to unite with an experience.[15] This is ego-related, states Harvey, the seeking of certain identity and desire for certain type of rebirth eternally.[5] Other scholars explain that this type of craving is driven by the wrong view of eternalism (eternal life) and about permanence.[4][16]
Vibhava-tanha (craving for non-existence):[4] craving to not experience unpleasant things in the current or future life, such as unpleasant people or situations.[5] This sort of craving may include attempts at suicide and self-annihilation, and this only results in further rebirth in a worse realm of existence.[5] This type of craving, states Phra Thepyanmongkol, is driven by the wrong view of annihilationism, that there is no rebirth.[16]

It's impossible to play real music without soul.

True art requires passion, an expression of emotion. It's an expression of the soul. You can't sell your soul for music, be it a fiddle or a guitar, you give your soul to music, the rest falls in place.

Selling your soul to the devil, an ironic poeticism.

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the weather."

"since everything is contained within you"

couldn't you just form a pact with that devil of you and not have this dilemma?

my opinion is that these forces are exceedingly rare and are not able to be understood fully from our perspective, and or your friend could be talented beyond compare

lets get a word from your friend about this covenant

Speaking from my own very real experiences i can only echo the advice of many others on this thread. Rely on yourself to develop your skills. A few years ago i sold my soul to the devil in exchange for him doing some part time light gardening work for me. He always turned up late and refused to mow the lawn on account of his hay fever. A total rip off merchant.

Wait... where is your evidence? I was definitely 100 % sure that being a good musician depended on whether I was favored by God or The Devil and which one of them will own my immaterial energy state once I perish in external reality.
