Hi,

A friend of mine as bought a buchner funnel and a decanting funnel with the goal to conduct the puriest extraction he can.


The problem is, that, in order to use is decanting funnel, he must filter the solution first (or the plant material would block the stopcock).

During his research, he stumble upon this old thread :

He learned that an A/B extraction would be better in order to use is decanting funnel. He would like to understand why a A/B extractiong would be better than an STB in order to use the decanting funnel. Maybe the solution is easier to filter when it's acidic ?

Any help would be appreciated.

In a typical A/B, plant material is heated several times in acidic water, that water being decanted and replaced several times, and then roughly filtered prior to basing.

EDIT : I think i was just talking about an acid TO base. I get the terms confused. But still...

Thanks for your answer. I still don't get why the separating funnel would be easier with an A/B extraction. Why wouldn't I filter my basified solution during the STB process before decanting ?

typically what I did was I boiled the plant material in water acidified with citric acid, ~ph3. Filtered filtered it off, washed with a tiny bit of naptha in the sep funnel, basified, extracted it w=using the sep funnel, and washed the naptha layer with distilled water a good 3 times. it'll help remove some of the basic media from when you based out the solution.

but definitelt do filter before you basify the solution since you leave the contaminating source of fats/particles/etc behind if you dont.
