all sorts of samples.
going to do it legit, going to get the instrument validated.

and you're right, 5K is a great deal. the roughing pump alone goes for $1700+ used.

You're able to power that entirely via solar panel power?
That's awesome! Talk about some serious home science. Very happy

yes,thanks.
while the ion source is off, it draws about 1 kW. with it on, it would probably be around 3 kW.

I'm generating 3-4 kW during peak hours, 11a-2p.

electrospray.

I may invest in a nanospray emitter eventually, then a newer machine (LTQ)

status update:
I just got the nitrogen and UHP helium. I ordered calibration solution, and prepared a 10 pg/nL standard solution of tryptamine hcl in 50:50 isopropanol:water.
I'll baseline the instrument this weekend, and hopefully do a few test runs on the standard.

Will you be able to test out Caapi Specimens as well? I have some interesting vine samples in the plant vault that definately have a unique character to them.

I connected the UHP helium and nitrogen.
for the first time since I got the instrument, I turned on the detector. Big grin

I'll baseline the next couple days, calibrate, and run tryptamine. stay tuned. (n.p.i.)

the screenshots tell me that there is residual calibrator solution in the instrument, probably the heated ion capillary (the inlet leading to the analyzer), and that it is out of tune (those numbers vary slightly from the actual values).

this is why I need to "baseline", to get a low noise signal, then optimize the analyzer voltages, and recalibrate, then tune

Exciting stuff indeed.

On those screen shots the scale only goes down to 100 m/e and seems decidedly coarse. Presumably when it's up and running you'll be able to look in finer detail at smaller stuff? Most of what we're interested in will be weighing in at well below 500 amu.

Do the outputs pictured represent output from the detector? If so, what are those heavy peaks it's seeing?

Edit: I see you just covered some of these questions while I was typing Smile

“There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work."
― Jacques Bergier, quoting Fulcanelli
