I wanted to start this thread as a means of collecting MKULTRA information, any MKUKTRA discussion and information is welcome.

I wanted to start with a lesser known incident: Pont-Saint-Esprit, France, 15 August 1951 this village encountered an incident of mass psychedelic intoxication, this was initially blamed on "saint Anthony's fire" which is ergot intoxication.

I've always suspected Pont-saint-espirit France's mass poisoning Of being an MKULTRA cooperation, but never had any solid evidence.

Then a document connecting Frank Olsen to the incident surfaced.

Quote:
an American investigative journalist, Hank Albarelli, revealed a CIA document labelled: "Re: Pont-Saint-Esprit and F.Olson Files. SO Span/France Operation file, inclusive Olson. Intel files. Hand carry to Belin - tell him to see to it that these are buried."
F. Olson is Frank Olson, a CIA scientist who, at the time of the Pont St Esprit incident, led research for the agency into the drug LSD.
David Belin, meanwhile, was executive director of the Rockefeller Commission created by the White House in 1975 to investigate abuses carried out worldwide by the CIA.
Albarelli believes the Pont-Saint-Esprit and F. Olson Files, mentioned in the document, would show - if they had not been "buried" - that the CIA was experimenting on the townspeople, by dosing them with LSD.

(BBC article on the CIA and this incident)

Some back ground:

Source: Wikipedia
The program began in the early 1950s, was officially sanctioned in 1953, was reduced in scope in 1964, further curtailed in 1967 and officially halted in 1973.[2] The program engaged in many illegal activities,[3][4][5] including the use of unwitting U.S. and Canadian citizens as its test subjects, which led to controversy regarding its legitimacy.[3](p74)[6][7][8] MKUltra used numerous methodologies to manipulate people's mental states and alter brain functions, including the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, hypnosis,[9] sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture.[not verified in body]

The scope of Project MKUltra was broad, with research undertaken at 80 institutions, including 44 colleges and universities, as well as hospitals, prisons, and pharmaceutical companies.[10] The CIA operated through these institutions using front organizations, although sometimes top officials at these institutions were aware of the CIA's involvement.[11] As the US Supreme Court later noted, MKULTRA was:

concerned with "the research and development of chemical, biological, and radiological materials capable of employment in clandestine operations to control human behavior." The program consisted of some 149 subprojects which the Agency contracted out to various universities, research foundations, and similar institutions. At least 80 institutions and 185 private researchers participated. Because the Agency funded MKUltra indirectly, many of the participating individuals were unaware that they were dealing with the Agency.[12]

Destruction of the MKULTRA files:

Project MKUltra was first brought to public attention in 1975 by the Church Committee of the U.S. Congress, and a Gerald Ford commission to investigate CIA activities within the United States. Investigative efforts were hampered by the fact that CIA Director Richard Helms ordered all MKUltra files destroyed in 1973; the Church Committee and Rockefeller Commission investigations relied on the sworn testimony of direct participants and on the relatively small number of documents that survived Helms' destruction order.[13]

In 1977, a Freedom of Information Act request uncovered a cache of 20,000 documents relating to project MKUltra, which led to Senate hearings later that same year.[3][14] In July 2001, some surviving information regarding MKUltra was declassified. -Wikipedia

We will never know how deep programs such as these actually went, as most of the documentation had been destroyed...

This size and scope of this operation was unnerving...there's still so much to look into, even though we only have a fraction of the information regarding this program.

From "operation midnight climax" and "MKARTICHOKE" and "MKNAOMI", Frank Olsen, Sidney gotleib, and even records of a high ranking MKULTRA agent posing as a "beatnik" and dosing unsuspecting citizens in the hip coffee shops of San Francisco, to stories of agents dropping LSD on one another, prostitutes luring victims into bugged cia hotel rooms for the CIA, then there's the prisons, the universities, the hospitals, and colleges...it's almost never ending, like I said, even with the sparse information we have, there's a lot to look into here...

people have even tied the "laurel canyon / lookout mountain" theories into MKUKTRA, but since this is speculation and theory I never investigated it in any depth.

They should teach people about this in schools, I try to tell people about my MKULTRA research, and I get looked at as a crazy person or worse a conspiracy theorist, most people are unwilling to believe the CIA and parts of the United states government would ever do such things...

It also makes you think, if they were willing to go this far in the past, maybe some of these seemingly far out claims may have a shrewd of truth to them...well, it makes these things seem slightly more plausible when you know about the things they have actually done.

There's a great book called Brainwash by Dominic Streatfield that covers a bunch of stuff from the MKULTRA project and US government investigations into brainwashing and mind control.

It's a pretty good read, I highly recommend it. There's a lot of interesting stories from when the government experimented with psychedelics and cannabis.

1960s US: Drug all employees!
2000 US: You use drugs? ew. You're a drug abuser. You can't work here.
Every day I am thankful that I was introduced to psychedelic drugs.

LSD is bad! How do we know? From the thousands of Surprise Dosing Field Reports.

I wonder if any the agents conducting these operations were required to dose once, for training? Like getting "Pepper Spray Certified".

They all did.

They would drop LSD into an agents cup without telling him, have some fun with that agent until the LSD took effect, then send them home.

They would even dose high ranking political figures for fear that the Russians would surprise dose them before public events.

They gave Frank Olsen* LSD without his permission, he took it pretty hard, he worked with some pretty terrible chemical weapons for the CIA, they felt he was going to "spill the beans", so they bashed in his head and threw him from his hotel window, it was thought to be a suicide until olsen's family began to investigate far after his death, and turned up some pretty disturbing evidence.

The book in the link below describes all of this.

LSD actually isn't "bad", though I'm sure you know this...

Quote:
The primary health concerns about LSD use are related to psychological health rather than risk of physical damage to the body or brain. As senior LSD researcher Dr. David Nichols, Distinguished Chair of Pharmacology at Purdue University and head of one of the world's top LSD research labs, stated in his 2004 review article on hallucinogens, "There is no evidence that any of the hallucinogens, even the very powerful semisynthetic LSD, causes damage to any human body organ. [...] Hallucinogens do not cause life-threatening changes in cardiovascular, renal, or hepatic function because they have little or no affinity for the biological receptors and targets that mediate vital vegetative functions."1 Deaths resulting from the pharmacological effects of LSD are rare to non-existent. -erowid

The deaths related to the 1951 Pont-Saint-Esprit mass poisoning were due to behavior not toxicity, I believe...

Though the CIA did do some terrible things with LSD and other psychedelics and narcotics, through mental health facilities, prisons, and universities. they managed to use ordinary citizens, prisoners, mental health patients, hospital patients, etc...as experimental cattle, keep in mind this was about mind control not drugs, so MKULTRA victims were subject to all sorts of psychological and physical terrors, most of it is so out there that you probably would not believe me if I told you...the "acid dreams" PDF in my last post has some good information.

Trust me, this is some of the most interesting American history research you're probably going to find, simultaneously, I think it's important that people know this stuff, most would never believe that our government would ever do such a thing, and that's sad, because they did and are, and most still think these are far fetched notions...

The link above is a quick read, but covers a good deal, it's a great starting point in researching MKULTRA, below is an excerpt:

Quote:
Dr. Harris Isbell, director of the Addiction Research Center at the Public Health Service Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, was paid by MKULTRA to perform basic research on psychoactive drugs, including several psychedelics. He drew test subjects from his captive patient population of opiate addicts, offering them heroin in exchange for "volunteering" for his experiments. Subjects were administered LSD, DMT, mescaline, methamphetamine, psilocybin and other drugs, sometimes in very large doses.5 In one experiment, Isbell administered LSD to seven men for 77 consecutive days.

Dr. Ewen Cameron of McGill University in Montreal developed experimental techniques to rebuild personalities in his clinic. Cameron became interested in altering the structure of personality as a possible treatment for psychological disorders such as schizophrenia. He believed that he could cure mental illness by replacing schizophrenic personalities with newly created ones. The CIA had no interest in treating schizophrenia, but it was very interested in the possibility of rebuilding personality; MKULTRA began covertly funding Cameron's experiments in 1957.

Cameron's "depatterning" process consisted of two stages. In the first stage, amnesia was induced through an extreme form of "sleep therapy", where subjects were heavily sedated and given daily electroshock treatments over a period of several weeks. Cameron would next attempt to construct a new personality through "psychic driving" during which subjects were forced to listen to repeating tape loops, designed to restructure their psyches, for as long as sixteen hours a day for another several weeks. They were sometimes restrained in beds, and frequently given doses of LSD.

At least 86 universities or institutions were involved in MKULTRA projects in varying capacities.6 Many MKULTRA researchers were highly regarded; Cameron was president of the American Psychiatric Association in 1953, and Isbell's findings were published in scientific journals and his tolerance studies are cited to this day. https://www.erowid.org/p...a/mkultra_article1.shtml

The drug testing is a mystery to me. How did the CIA feel that LSD and such things fitted in with national security?

All of this started back in the very early fifties, when you will recall we were just coming out of the Korean War and there was deep concern over the issue of brainwashing.

As a matter of fact, a man named Hunter had written a book entitled "Brainwashing in Red China," and "brainwashing" was a literal translation of the Chinese words, and we wondered what it was all about. Did they use sodium pentothal or drugs of one kind or another?

We had learned that something called LSD had been discovered in Switzerland by a scientist named Hoffman. It was tasteless, odorless, and colorless and taken even in small quantities created a kind of schizophrenia.

Coincidentally, I think it was in 1952, Ambassador Kerman came out of Moscow and made a speech in Berlin that the Soviets regarded as so egregious that they declared him persona non grata. We wondered whether he'd been administered somedrug that caused him to act in such an aberrant fashion. There were a number of things going on that puzzled us.*

We felt that it was our responsibility not to lag behind the Russians or the Chinese in this field, and the only way to find out what the risks were was to test things such as LSD and other drugs that could be used to control human behavior.

These experiments went on for many years. There is the inevitable question of whether they should have been ended sooner.

Allen Dulles, who was the Director back in those days, authorized this thing to be undertaken, but we all felt that we would have been derelict not to investigate this area.

Who else in government was going to investigate it? It was our field. Maybe our people abroad would be administered drugs. In other words, in a defensive way we felt we would have failed in our responsibilities if we hadn't investigated what was there, if anything.

The commission said it is clearly illegal to test potentially dangerous drugs on unsuspecting US citizens.

There was one instance in which that was the case, and in retrospect I agree we should not have done it.

There is virtually no drug-related MK-ULTRA material in the files, we gather? In terms of destruction of those files, the seven boxes of progress reports that I think you had recalled from the Archives and destroyed on 31 January, was a booklet called "LSD 25, Some Unpsychedelic Implications." Why did you decide to do that?

It was a conscious decision that there were a whole series of things that involved Americans who had helped us with the various aspects of this testing, with whom we had had a fiduciary relationship and whose participation we had agreed to keep secret. Since this was a time when both I and the fellow who had been in charge of the program were going to retire there was no reason to have the stuff around anymore. We kept faith with the people who had helped us and I see nothing wrong with that. https://www.cia.gov/libr.../html/v44i4a07p_0021.htm

Acid dreams was my introduction to MKULTRA, I mean I had heard random LSD enthusiasts briefly describe CIA LSD programs, but took it with a grain of salt until I read acid dreams.

Frank Olsen information:

Frank Olsen was a CIA biochemist, he had been involved in some pretty scary chemical weapons programs*. Recent documents even link Olsen to the mass LSD poisoning in france. After working for some time in the MKUKTRA program, Frank's colleagues slip LSD into his drink, as was standard practice for CIA agents to drop acid on one another without telling each other (good God, it's like these agents were an uptight government version of kesey's pranksters), and Frank goes into an introspective depression, in the time after Frank's LSD exposure, he was distant, distraught, disenchanted, and so on...maybe he got a taste of the chemicals he had been developing as weapons, and realized the impact of his actions...regardless the agency thought he would "spill the beans" on all his secret chemical weapons work, so, Frank was murdered in his hotel, hit with a blunt object to the head, the CIA then throws his dead body out the window to fake a suicide...which it was considered, until a recent autopsy verified blunt trauma head injuries which occured before the fall...

The book below outlines olsens murder:

A Terrible Mistake: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA’s Secret Cold War Experiments is a book by H. P. Albarelli Jr

Some back ground on Olsen:
Quote:
Olson was born in Hurley, Iron County, Wisconsin and earned both B.S. and Ph.D. degrees (Bacteriology, 193Cool at the University of Wisconsin. He worked for a time at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and then served as a captain in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. As a civilian, he was recruited to Camp Detrick, and to the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratories, by the distinguished UW scientist Ira Baldwin, the technical director there. (Baldwin had been his departmental advisor at UW.) At Camp Detrick, Baldwin worked with industrial partners like George W. Merck and the U.S. military, to establish the top secret U.S. bioweapons program beginning in 1943, a time when interest in applying modern technology to warfare was undergoing a boom. Olson's duties included experiments with aerosolized anthrax.[2] After 10 years, he was a senior bacteriologist at the program.[3]

At some point, while assigned as a civilian U.S. Army contactor, Olson began working as a CIA employee with the CIA's Technical Services Staff (TSS), run by Sidney Gottlieb and his deputy Robert Lashbrook.[2] Some of his CIA colleagues were involved in the MKNAOMI-MKULTRA program, previously known as Project Artichoke and earlier, Project Bluebird. It was a program to explore the possible espionage and military uses of psychotropic drugs. -Wikipedia

Operation midnight climax:
Quote:
1953–1964: Operation Midnight Climax — CIA’s lurid ventures into sex, hookers and LSD
Operation Midnight Climax was an operation known only to Richard Helms and Gottlieb’s Technical Support Division; it was a free-wheeling illicit criminal operation headed by George Hunter White, an Army Captain, OSS officer, veteran agent of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) who was also a CIA operative. During the day, White worked as an FBN agent to keep psychoactive drugs out of circulation, and when night fell, he and his minions dispensed these drugs widely to strangers in in San Francisco and New York. Thousands of unwitting men were lured to CIA-sponsored drug and sex sessions by prostitutes at CIA’s “safe houses.” The prostitutes received $100 a night and were guaranteed protection from police harassment. The walls of CIA’s bordellos were decorated with photos of women in bondage and other suggestive sexual images. White had unrestricted use of surveillance technology; LSD and other mind-altering substances were slipped into the johns’ liquor by the hookers, and their sexual encounters were monitored and recorded from behind two-way mirrors. These taped sexual encounters were useful for blackmailing johns — some of who were prominent upstanding citizens.

White would watch the drugged sex while sipping martinis; to maintain his Jekyll-and-Hyde routine he reportedly relied heavily on alcohol and drugs. (Lee and Shlain. Acid Dreams, 1992; Cockburn and St. Clair Whiteout, 1998; San Francisco Weekly, 2012) “The agency, TIME Magazine noted, “appeared to be experiencing its own form of madness.” (2012)

Colin Ross, MD a psychiatrist who examined extant CIA documents found a memo indicating another purpose for Operation Midnight Climax: the CIA was actually testing the performance of the prostitutes under conditions that mimicked a field operation, to see whether they could become female spies or agents. The johns were given LSD as part of the cover for testing CIA’s female Manchurian Candidates prior to their use in actual operations (the mission being to have sex with and extract information from targets). The recruitment of street prostitutes provided an additional layer of cover for the testing of the Manchurian Candidates, plus it provided free live pornography for the CIA officers.” (Ross. CIA Mind Control Doctors from Harvard to Guantanomo,2013)

Under Operation Midnight Climax, CIA operatives acted as drug suppliers, infiltrating different drug-using groups with political points of view deemed to be of “interest” and relayed information to CIA headquarters. Thus, thousands of ordinary Americans were subjected — most often without their knowledge or consent — to heavy doses of LSD and other highly potent illegal, hallucinatory drugs and surreptitiously surveyed.

There were a number of hospitals, prisons, and universities that were involved with MKULTRA, and some of the research these doctors were allowed to preform under direction of the CIA is horrifying...

Donald Ewen Cameron would keep patients pumped full of psychoactives or kept in a coma and exposed them to looped recordings in an attempt to "program" them...

Quote:
During the 1950s and 1960s, Cameron became involved in what has later become known as the MKUltra mind control program, which was covertly sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)[2] and which eventually led to the publication of the KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation manual. He is unrelated to another CIA psychiatrist, Alan S. Cameron, who helped pioneer psychological profiling of world leaders during the 1970s and was not associated with the behavioral modification research program.[18]

Cameron had been hoping to correct schizophrenia by erasing existing memories and reprogramming the psyche. He commuted from Albany to Montreal every week to work at McGill's Allan Memorial Institute and was paid $69,000 from 1957 to 1964 to carry out MKUltra experiments there. In addition to LSD, he experimented with various paralytic drugs and electroconvulsive therapy at thirty to forty times the normal power.[19] His "driving" experiments consisted of putting a subject into a drug-induced coma for weeks at a time (up to three months in one case) while playing tape loops of noise or simple statements. These experiments were typically carried out on patients who had entered the institute for minor problems such as anxiety disorders and postnatal depression; many suffered permanent debilitation after these treatments.[20] Such consequences included incontinence, amnesia, forgetting how to talk, forgetting their parents, and thinking their interrogators were their parents.[21] His work was inspired and paralleled by the psychiatrist William Sargant, who was also involved with the Intelligence Services and experimented extensively on his patients without their consent, causing similar long-term damage.

Though it's not all horror stories and Nazi style experimentation, some good did come out of MKULTRA programs...

Many famous individuals were exposed to LSD through government/CIA programs...

Ken kesey was first exposed to psychedelics through an MKULTRA program at Menlo park vets hospital...

The funny thing is, after kesey had participated in these experiments, the Menlo park facility was broken into, all the psychedelics were stolen, including alpha-methyl-tryptamine (it-290), a rare tryptamine, which did show up on in kesey's scene shortly after the robbery...it seems obvious that kesey or one of his associates stole the psychedelics from Menlo park...

Quote:
In 1959, doctors at Stanford University began asking for volunteers to take part in a government research program in which they would be observed under the influence of various psychotropic drugs. The experiment was part of the government's wider search for "truth serums" and behavior-modification drugs designed for interrogations and psychological warfare. The drugs being tested included peyote, ditran, mescaline, IT-290 and a synthetic hallucinogen called Lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD-25 as it was more commonly known.

In the spring of 1960, Kesey began participating in these government-sponsored experiments with psychopharmacology, conducted by Stanford scientists at the Menlo Park Veteran's Hospital in Northern California. He was paid $75 to be an experimental subject, take psychedelic pharmaceuticals and report on their effects. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, $75 in 1960 would be the approximate equivalent of more than $550 dollars today. $550 to take LSD?! This somewhat explains Kesey's participaton.

In a 1998 interview with Stanford Magazine, Ken Kesey likened the experiments to exploring a haunted house:
“[The scientists] didn’t have the guts to do it themselves, so they hired students. ‘Hey, we found this room. Would you please go inside and let us know what’s going on in there?’ When we came back out, they took one look at us and said, ‘Whatever they do, don’t let them go back in that room!’”
IT-290, a psychadelic stimulant, was originally used in the 1960's as an antidepressant; however, it quickly fell out of clinical use due to toxicity and abuse concerns. In the early 1960s, LSD was also a legal drug; the medical profession was experimenting with LSD in the hope of using it in the treatment of the mentally ill. Kesey found the Ditran nightmarish, but thought that the LSD - then practically unknown outside the research community - was pretty great. He already worked as a night aide in the psychiatric ward of the Veteran’s Hospital, and it was during his nightshifts there that he spent time talking to various patients, sometimes under the influence of the LSD he had taken as part of the program.

The drugs Kesey took while participating in the research program had a profound effect on him, and his experiences at the Menlo Park Veteran's Hospital would ultimately influence his novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. In addition, his LSD-laced experiences helped pave the way for the transformation of the beat movement to the hippie movement in San Francisco - a countercultural transformation in which Kesey played a leading role. https://www.pcs.org/blog...n-in-psychopharmacology/

Ron stark was a CIA agent, and was also the head alchemist for the brotherhood of eternal love, if you want a good CIA/LSD story, stark would be the place to start...

Quote:
11/30/11 -- The curse of doing research out here in Weirdoland is that the really fascinating people are nearly impossible to do research on. For instance, when you're covertly running the world's largest LSD manufacturing and smuggling operation for the CIA, you're not going to be doing interviews in Newsweek or publishing an autobiography. That's precisely the problem with Ronald Hadley Stark, who is one of the most insane characters in the history of LSD -- and that's really saying something, don't you think?

This article has been updated considerably since I first published it. Stark's life story is beyond belief, so I think it's important to be meticulous. There are, no doubt, still hundreds of errors here.

For anyone unfamiliar with the tangle of political, scientific, cultural and covert forces behind spread of LSD, this article could get confusing. Ronald Stark is a central figure in David Black's book ACID: A Secret History of LSD, but the best overall introduction to this material would be Acid Dreams, by Lee & Shlain. It's short and very readable, laying out the overall history in clear terms. For more serious seekers, I highly recommend HP Albarelli's masterpiece, A Terrible Mistake, which is meticulously documented and considerably broader than mere LSD history.

The Super-Context

Stark had been working with US intelligence agencies for at least 9 years by the time of his most infamous moment, a legendary meeting with the "hippie mafia" drug syndicate called The Brotherhood of Eternal Love. (no joke.) They were looking for a new supplier and Stark kicked off the meeting by showing them a kilogram of liquid LSD -- for US readers, that's 2.2 pounds of acid. Needless to say, his resume was persuasive. He claimed to have a dedicated lab in France, but it's his political philosophy that really makes Stark such an interesting character:

"He had a mission, he explained, to use LSD in order to facilitate the overthrow of the political systems of both the capitalist West and communist East by inducing altered states of consciousness in millions of people. Stark did not hide the fact that he was well connected in the world of covert politics."

The Brotherhood was sufficiently impressed to bring Ronald Stark into the fold, and what followed was the Golden Era of cheap, high-quality LSD. From 1969 through 1973, Stark and the Brotherhood dosed a generation and got away with it, too.

According to a figure quoted by everyone and verified by nobody, Stark made 20 kilograms of LSD in his career. Hippie lore generally gives Owsley Stanley the crown of the Acid King, but by Stanley's own estimates, his total production was a half kilogram. That might not sound like much -- but it adds up to over 5 million hits of acid. You can see why the Army and Navy were so interested in this compound: it is unusually powerful as drug molecules go.

Although the LSD story is closely associated with the Sandoz pharmaceutical corporation in Switzerland, most of the CIA's supply was actually domestic. Since at least 1954, the Eli Lilly Company was working under secret contract to keep the various MKNAOMI and ARTICHOKE research projects stocked up with magic mindfuck juice. The figures on their total LSD output are classified.

"He had a mission, he explained, to use LSD in order to facilitate the overthrow of the political systems of both the capitalist West and communist East by inducing altered states of consciousness in millions of people. Stark did not hide the fact that he was well connected in the world of covert politics." http://www.brainsturbato...n-behind-the-lsd-curtain

Wow, yep... Sounds like typical government covert operations for you.

And all of this will be as remembered by people as a death of a warrior in a medieval war. People to self concerned to be caring these days, now enough of this nexus crap I am switching to Facebook. Shocked

Mean what you say and say what you mean, I always do.

Quote:
The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

'Who are you?' said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, 'I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'

'What do you mean by that?' said the Caterpillar sternly. 'Explain yourself!'

'I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir' said Alice, 'because I'm not myself, you see.'

'I don't see,' said the Caterpillar.

'I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly,' Alice replied very politely, 'for I can't understand it myself to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing.'

'It isn't,' said the Caterpillar.

'Well, perhaps you haven't found it so yet,' said Alice; 'but when you have to turn into a chrysalis — you will some day, you know — and then after that into a butterfly, I should think you'll feel it a little queer, won't you?'

'Not a bit,' said the Caterpillar.

'Well, perhaps your feelings may be different,' said Alice; 'all I know is, it would feel very queer to me.'

'You!' said the Caterpillar contemptuously. 'Who are you?'

Which brought them back again to the beginning of the conversation. Alice felt a little irritated at the Caterpillar's making such very short remarks, and she drew herself up and said, very gravely, 'I think, you out to tell me who you are, first.'

'Why?' said the Caterpillar.

Here was another puzzling question; and as Alice could not think of any good reason, and as the Caterpillar seemed to be in a very unpleasant state of mind, she turned away.

'Come back!' the Caterpillar called after her. 'I've something important to say!'

This sounded promising, certainly: Alice turned and came back again.

'Keep your temper,' said the Caterpillar.
