I currently take Zantac, and use tums if i need to, but has anyone found any good ways of going about dealing with heartburn?

When I stopped drinking milk it reduced in 90%.. The other 10% were just eating generally light and not eating too fast. Maybe you have a completely different issue though.

Neutralize the acid with some kind of base (which I believe is the MoA of Alka-Seltzer).

Eat slowly.

Doesn't this lead to the body producing even more acid longterm?

I'd investigate if possible the cause of the heartburn, see if lifestyle/diet changes help, before going for some quick fix solution.

Well both my dad and one of my half brothers had to have a Nissen fundoplication. My mom thinks i may have a Hiatal Hernia.

And for the most part i've cleaned up my diet a good bit from what it used to be, but i do still have some work to do.

I have some issues with reflux myself including a hiatal hernia as well. I take
Omepresole everyday otherwise I'm in big trouble. Some people use apple cider vinegar with good results. Even though it seems counter intuitive it does work. Natural baking soda from health food store not off the shelf stuff in water can be effective as well.

This is what Im curious about. Some health bloggers i've followed suggested that heartburn may actually be associated in many cases with a low acid production and that things like PPI's in the long run exacerbate the problem. I haven't had time to delve into the details and figure out whether that's true or not or even why it would be true. But I try to minimize my use of maintenance therapies/pharmaceuticals, especially long term. And especially with GI issues. Those are things you really want to tackle at the root because they can really spiral out of control down the road. Sorry I can't be more helpful. If i get a break from my work this week I'll look into it more because I'm curious myself. But tackle your diet/lifestyle first and foremost. Look around and see if you can find much on the root causes, but don't do anything that might be inadvisable without consulting a professional first.

I eat zantac and it works well (get generic it'll save you moneys)... tracing the cause to your diet is the best way to go about it obv but sometimes that extra bottle of wine or pile of wings is just necessary. There is a drug called nexium which I have a bottle of for bad cases. Dunno where you are it is prescription in the US but it's called nexium and this is the nexus so it must be kismet. Talk to your doc. Also gaviscon (otc) is better than tums. Tums taste way better but gaviscon is where its at.

I'll second the recommendation for Gaviscon.

Be aware Nexium and omeprazole used continuously long-term can cause vitamin B-12 deficiency since high acidity in the stomach is required for it's uptake. You don't want B-12 deficiency. Google it. To avoid that happening my doctor advised me to use these two only when symptoms flare up, which I sometimes do, but mostly I use Gaviscon.

FTR I have a hiatal hernia too.

And avoid a Nissen fundoplication if at all possible. That's some serious surgery for a problem that may be easily managed with meds.
I already asked Alice.

"But thats acid!"
"But wont it make it worse"

No. Just try it and be amazed. Works wonders!

Also, aloe vera juice is great for heartburn.

First off you are getting heart burn because you have an over-active production of HCL (stomach acid.)

The reason you have over-active HCL production is because your body is depleted of enzymes (which are the main method of digestion for foods to be metabolized within the body.)

Because you have a lack of digestive enzymes, your body tries to compensate by upping the production of HCL. Furthermore, by taking things like: Zantac, Gaviscon, Tums, Gravol, etc; or any base to neutralize the acid you are only training your body to continually ramp up the production of HCL only worsening the problem. If you continue down the path of using band-aid prescription drugs to mask the problem instead of cure it you will certainly have to deal with a great amount of more serious and major issues down the road.

The solution is the let your body re-balance itself by taking a high quality digestive enzyme, reintegrating beneficial bacteria to the digestive tract (Probiotics.) Personally having digestive issues in the past and finding a cure instead of relying on crutch prescription drugs has made the world of difference in every aspect of our life.

I highly recommend these as a starting point, still personally taking them and finding the digestion and energy gained from meals much more complete!

http://two-farm-kids-nat...lti-enzyme-full-spectrum

Also the probiotics will need to be reestablished within the digestive tract and this blend of localizing as well as some transient bacteria is the most effective. Unless you are eating fresh garden vegetables complete with black dirt on them (which is where humans would naturally get probiotics from) then you should also supplement this.

http://www.twofarmkids.c...ultimate-multi-probiotic

This is one we personally use as well. I highly recommend getting Canadian supplements because the laws in the United States of America allow any idiot/scammer to create a supplement with basically ZERO quality testing of it. Where as in Canada there are much higher standards and every product created here is followed with heavy scrutiny and testing to ensure you are getting what they say you are getting!

*Just FYI we have assisted many individuals from many facets of life and with different issues. Our experience comes from over 20 years in the health food industry, personal health as a lifestyle/hobby as well as trials and tribulations we faced, and 4 yr. Bsc natural sciences (currently working on complementing masters.)

Let us know if you have any questions, getting people off of prescription drugs is our goal! We do not like to feed the disgusting industry that is keeping the people sick and on drugs in the first place. We will do what we can to stop them and shed light on the truth.

Keep well and keep your chin up, Cheers Smile

Can also vouch for these, they are great for maintenance, may not be a complete cure, it depends on the severity of your symptoms.

The apple-cider vinegar works because it is actually loaded with alkalizing minerals. This means it actually has a very high Ph despite its acetic acid and malic acid content. You want an alkalized body as it will promote enzyme digestion and metabolization of foods among many other health benefits.

This brings about a more complete cure however; try to orient your diet to an alkalizing food type diet. Stay away from refined sugars, preservatives, GMO/non-organic foods, alcohol, refined grains.

Simply cutting refined grains/sugars out of the diet does wonders for peoples lives!

I have always had heart burn issues with milk , yoghurt.
Cheese and butter is not a problem.
In the lingering moments before you die your body releases DMT‬. The same drug that makes you dream. The same drug found in every living animal. It's not an evolutionary trick to make you survive. Your body is choosing to release this drug now because it believes your fate is too grim for you to comprehend. So you dream. You dream that everything will be fine. You dream that nothing happened at all. It's in this moment that your body sits across from you. It tells you 'looks like we're not gonna make it this time.' You sit around a fire and recollect the past before soon parting ways back to the atomic ether. Your body does this because it loves you. You have never met anyone like your body. Your body has been with you everyday, good and bad. It's even kept a journal of your life carved in scars. Your eyelashes always wiped the tears from your eyes.

I think the jury's still out on that one - a quick search around Google Scholar didn't find anything conclusive. Lifestyle change is probably the best option, I wouldn't be shocked to learn that chronically altering your physiological pH doesn't have some effect, but as a short-term fix (especially during debilitating episodes), I think it's fine.
