This sounds like a joke or a PK Dick novel, but my new "smart" refrigerator is spying on me. It has a built in wifi system and I cannot seem to disable it. The powers that be want to spy on people through their devices like TV's, mobile devices, home appliances, etc. My new fridge is an LG Studio Refrigerator lsfd2491st. If anyone knows about electronics and can help me out with diagrams or any other info on how to disable the WiFi I would appreciate it. There is no info that I can find through basic search engines. I do not know how to search the "dark web" for this info, so if anyone does know how and can send me a link to info or a diagram that would help I would appreciate it.

Despite being wifi enabled, it won't be able to connect to a network unless you set it up. The simple solution is to not provide it with the credentials to your wifi network.

It is already active. I did nothing and it is already communicating with our "smart" electric meter which is soon to be swapped out for an analogue one. It is also broadcasting a WiFi signal my mobile phone can pick up. I'd like to shut it off.

It amazes me how many things now a days are being connected to the Internet like this to collect information about us. It disgusts me. We really have no privacy anymore.

If you can locate the wifi component, but just cant safely disable, you could jacket it with a faraday cage. A grounded piece of foil or wire mesh around it would block any signal.
My whole router is in a grounded wire mesh envelope despite my wireless being disabled in settings. I have one friend whos successfully hacked routers that had the wireless 'disabled'.
Cant hack through a faraday cage tho.

The reason why is because people buy them, if they didn't buy their gimmicks then there wouldn't be wifi refrigerators, wifi toasters, stoves etc. Long as people keep buying them that don't care about their privacy then they will make them.

I thought I read an article not long ago about some students in a university making something that can ping your wifi or router or something and will essentially give them an idea of where you are at in your house, hiding behind something or not. They said it would be great for hostage situations but we all know better.

The fridge was a gift. If any of us had known it was a "smart" WiFi device we would not have bought it. We would have asked for something similar that was not a WiFi device.

Can you change the wifi password on your router and just not tell the fridge?

Sorry if I struck a nerve, wasn't referring to you. I know most on here wouldn't buy such things. I was trying to answer gone and back about what the world is coming to with this technology, because you know a refrigerator with a tv on it is just so important, A washer that tells your phone when the laundry is done is a must. All selling gimmicks trying to convince us how we ever lived without them before all while relaying information about us in the background.

Lobotomize it! Simply disconnect DC power to the necessary circuit. In this case, either to the wifi module itself (easy to identify by the chip number and design) or to the entire logic board. Done!

wifi fridge lol, this has to be one of the most useless techs ive seen in a while. If wifi is not connected to a network it is not communicating with anything. If you cant disable it in the settings, it shouldnt connect to your network if you didnt set it up and enter the password, unless you dont have one. If you dont just create one or if you already entered it change the password, or you can prob physically disconnect it somehow. Regarding the "smart" meter dont think its from the wifi, but rather an rfid chip that sends to it info like the product model, what time and for how long its working. You should def get rid of that thing back to an analog, wouldnt want electric company having so much control over my electricity.

Why is the wifi fridge needed in the first place? Has there been a concrete answer? It's a device to cool and freeze food, nothing more. I don't think I'll ever understand the novelty of having useless things.

The customer is king. Maybe there's a demand for an app that tells you that your freeze precipitation is done? What's also cool about wifi in general, is that it can monitor the room for you. So in case the FBI wants to steal your ice cubes or naphtha, the fridge can notice this and set off an alarm.

Given your signature, I'm curious as to what you make of all this. Can this technology be abused?
