There was always a little vinegar left within the goo that never seemed like it wants to go away fully. Your best bet is to do a sodium carbonate wash, which will 1)Clean up the spice a bit and 2)Neutralizes the vinegar/acetate and converts the spice into free base form.
Were you using MHRB or ACRB? What temperature did you use?
Quote:With the heating method, it is guesswork. With a sodium carbonate wash, you guarantee that your product is now in free base or a "smokable" form.
Okay I'll wash with sodium carb solution.
Quote: My first batch of changa that I ever made was made with Spice that had been "free based with heat" supposedly but when I smoked it, it was harsh and slightly tasted of vinegar. Plus the trips were hit and miss because I was trying to smoke a salt form of DMT which doesn't work very well. This was after leaving the vinegar laden with spice in a dish suspended above a pot of boiling water for several hours until it no longer smelled of vinegar. And then leaving it to sit in the open air for a few days. It smelled like spice and not of vinegar until it was smoalked.
Hmmm, that's interesting.

I trust you, thanks for your response. I'm still going to try this and if it doesn't work out as planned I'll just get some acetone and do a proper conversion. I want to avoid solvents at all costs if I can.
Right on, man! I'm all for people continuing to experiment with Q21's heat method. It can't be discredited fully until a lot of experimentation says otherwise. I am very interested in your results.
To answer your question(s), I have actually tried this method on both MHRB and ACRB (much more extensively with ACRB, only once with MHRB). I suspended my pyrex dish with vinegar/spice above a pot of boiling water which heated the dish to approximately +/-212 degrees F. I've also experimented with evaporating it in a a food dehydrator. Unfortunately, I have a cheap one that doesn't tell me what temperature it operates at. Dehydration was based on time rather than temps when using this method.
The main reason I strayed away from this method is that after inhaling a bit of vinegar vapor, I quickly realized that it was unpleasant and likely bad for one's health, IMO. It was worlds apart whenever I smoked some spice using the sodium carb method. Keep in mind that with a sodium carb wash, you will likely lose some of the overall yield but this results in a purer product.
Sometimes I even take the free base (after sodium carb wash) and dissolve it in hot heptane (hot water bath) and decant away even more impurities. But I know you said you wanted to avoid solvents.
All in all, I have had the best results from ACRB using Cyb's tek with Earthwalker's cleanup steps found here:
