I've been a lurker for a long time and I've learned a vast welth of knowledge from this forum. I've resisted posting for as long as I can but this issue has caused great frustration for someone I know.
A friend recently acquired some spice and decided to try to Recrystalize it due to some conclusions made about it. First the reason; The spice is pure white, resembles baking soda, and had the proper smell so it was assumed that it's good quality spice. Upon administration, the spice would not melt for vaporization despite many different heat variations and methods. The usual method of vaporization used in the past with the yellowish pink chunks acquired in the past was to place it on a quarts nail attached to a water pipe. This method worked great. This spice would mostly turn to ash with all methods. An exorbant quantanty was needed for a break through(titrated up about 200mg). A lot of spice was wasted.

Next Recrystalization was attempted using one gram of spice in 30ml of naphta. Solution was placed in a slow cooker at lowest temperature setting. First abnormality noted was Approximatly less then 50 percent would dissolve in the solvent. The solvent solution was separated from the undissolved solids and freeze precipitation was attempted. After 4 days there was no crystal formation.
Meanwhile the remaining undissolved solids was dissolved in distilled water.( A small portion of lye was added to the water solution to insure proper alkalinity over 12. Naphtha was added three times, shaken, and separated from the water. That solution was consolidated to the original container and then evaporated down to a milky white consistency. Freeze precipitation was attempted again with no results in two days other then a little bit of ice.
Then as a last ditch effort, the solution was completely evaporated away.
The result; a very fine film of paste of a yellowish tan color(like ear wax) and 5 or 6 little crystals about the size of pinheads. There is FAR less then a gram. It looks like a guesstimated 95 percent of spice has seemingly disappeared(where else could it have went???) the only that was made is it broke down or mostly remains in the water(which was saved just in case that was the problem and it could somehow be recovered from the water by other means other then a none polar solvent pull)
Three conclusions where made based on research here on this site. Either a large proportion has oxidized, it was not properly basified(because some dissolved in solvent and some dissolved in water), or it was some sort of "fumerate".
Is this salvageable? Where did the DMT go? What was done wrong?
