It might be even a (number of) survival reflex(es) that has to be overridden.

Why?

Personal experience. My mind and body threw anything at my first launches, both clearly felt threatened big time. My hearth rate was so excessive high that even that became an extra issue. My whole system flicked into survival mode (was my interpretation). Why? It just did.
Luckily things changed for the better.

Well, in my experience so far, it seems like the more I vape, the more pleasant the onset is. If I vapo barly enough for a breakthrough, the separation process from body and mind, or ego loss, or questioning of my very own existence or whatever it is, seams to be rather long, pre-dominat and just simply weird... If I smoke enough, this process is so fast, I get blown strait to hyperspace without questioning who or what I am.
Also the second round of the day, when I must have some residual DMT in my body seems far smoother and pleasant ... Also, the preflight anxiety is far less the second round, which definitely helps with the whole experience
Love is all you need! And maybe some imagination....

Don't believe a word I say. None of it is true, all invented in my mind out of boredom.
