Hi Guys,

Just attempted my first Re-X with about 2 grams of yellow/orange spice using heptane. When taking it out of the freezer i've noticed that a good amount of the crystals are floating in the heptane and after uncovering i also noticed that some crystals are stuck all around the top edge of the bowl and the tin foil covering it?!

I've read up quite a bit and think that the crystals floating in the spirit is quite a common thing. Is there any way for me to prevent this from happening next time though, maybe evaporating some of the spirit or is there anything else i can do?

Also im guessing that the crystals that have stuck to the top of the bowl and the tin foil is maybe due to me putting the heptane into the freezer when it is still too warm from the water bath?

The brown goo that i have left over still looks like it may have something worth keeping in it as well. I did actually do three rinses in the end, would it be worth me keeping it for another rinse around and maybe using it to infuse on some leaf?

Sounds like the crystals jumped right out of your heptane! But really I have no idea how they would get on the tin foil like that. I usually use my sense of smell to tell me whether I should still be doing pulls on my crude. If it still smells strongly of indole then I keep pulling. Evapping some heptane might help get the crystals stuck to the bottom of your dish but I don't know of a reliable way to get this effect. If you evap then your dmt is going to start crashing out before it gets in the freezer and it might not be quite as clean this way.

Ive taken some pictures to show what i mean.

The ominous leftover goo (with possible goodies leftover).

The Re-X'd spice (with traces all over the sides and a thick goopy strip where the spirit stopped).

The leftover floating crystals that i have decanted into another container and placed back in the freezer (with the hope they will stick to the bottom).

Does all of this look okay and what are the chances of the floaters sticking to the bottom of the beaker after another lot of freeze precipitation?

Thanks flep.

The only think i can think of is that they jumped because of the heat!? I made the mistake of not cooling the heptane to room temperature before putting the container into the freezer. I would of thought it cooled when i decanted it into the larger dish though as there was only 50/60ml of heptane there & quite a large pyrex dish.

I also don't like the idea of evaporation (especially during re-x'ing) due to possible impurities getting into the spice. I also live with somebody that probably wouldn't take too kindly coming back after work to the smell of heptane in his home haha Very happy

Why is it bad if some of the crystals float on the surface? Just stir it a bit and they will sink to the bottom where you can decant them. If crystals keep floating just like snow and are hard to decant, then maybe it is... snow. Any water droplets in the solvent will also freeze precipitate!

I think that crystals on the aluminium foil may be caused by contact with the dmt-laden solvent when you put the beaker in the freezer. If the beaker is too full and the solvent splashes against the cover while moving, droplets may keep hanging off the cover and have crystals forming in them.

The weird thing is there was crystals even on the outside of the glass tray i used, under where i had put an elastic band round the tinfoil as well!? And also was super careful not to splash the solvent or let it contact anything other than the bottom of the tray, it does seem as if they have jumped in someway.

i have decanted the solvent with the floating xtals into that beaker in a hope they will stick to the bottom, but if not i think they will at least sink which will mean i can use a syringe to take the majority of the spirit off. Im pretty sure they aren't frozen water droplets as they look the same as the crystals that have formed on the bottom of the tray & also there shouldn't of been any water in there, but i suppose only time will tell..

Will post up with a report after the 24hrs freeze precip, fingers crossed will be good results Smile

MYSTERY SOLVED

My housemate failed to tell me that he had knocked the dish out fo the freezer and it fell on the floor. Also explains why i went from 2g to 0.3g... Did think that was a little too much to lose through a re-x.

Gutted!

Ouch, bad news with the spillage.

It's my understanding that Heptane (and Hexane), while good Re-X solvents,
are not suitable for freeze-precipitation ?

I thought that the best method to reclaim from Heptane is to evaporate.
Naphtha is best for freeze-precipitation.
