Hi ya'll,

Interesting development and relevent to discussions here around potentially engineering yeast to produce DMT...scientists have engineered yeast to produce THC.

Study:

Zirpel, B., Stehle, F. & , Kayser, O. (2015) Production of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid from cannabigerolic acid by whole cells of Pichia (Komagataella) pastoris expressing Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase from Cannabis sativa l. Biotechnology Letters, 37, (9), 1869-1875.

THC producing yeast? In 2015? Wasn't that already announced (practically done?) in 2010? Can't find the source now, too high Laughing

THC is readily prepared from already easily obtainable CBD oil. It's a neat advancement for sure though, but nothing marvelous.

Ah, the source was in the DMT / e.coli thread. And it was 2010, but with e.coli and not yeast.

Personally I think 1KG of pure THC, at a production cost of 2500 Eur IS marvelous.

//Edit//

Oh yes...I mixed up e.coli and yeast. Sad

Take that kilo, dissolve it in hexane and spay it on industrial hemp shreddings. Cheap dank for the masses. Laughing

I like the way you think. Very happy

I'm really hoping that theese e.coli/yeast strains somehow make their way out of the lab...into our hands.

Thanks. Yeah, I think Cannabis will be treated like wine in the future. From cheap industrial trimmings sprayed with a hexane/THC solution to single handtrimmed superhaze buds, pesticide/mold free with a HPLC cannabinoid certificate. I also hope that you can purchase frozen buds fresh from the plant like spinach in the future. That's my favorite way of 420 consumption. Put some frozen bud in the vapo @ 230° and inhale until it's dry and crumbly. Drool

Sounds a bit unconventional to me (at least the "frozen" part) but I will give it a try after next harvest. Smile

The benefits are no smell and no deterioration of the product. IDK how long you can store buds in the freezer, but I think they can stay there very long without any degeneration/oxidation or being affected by mold. And if you vape fresh bud, there's no typical 420 smell. Just some grassy vapors, but not that typical hashy smoke smell. The conversion of THCA to THC and the drying takes place instantaneously in the vapo . Thumbs up

@those THC producing e.colis

Imagine what would happen if one allows them to live in ones intestinal flora? *whhoaaah* Marvelous. Love

Why do you want e.coli in your intestinal flora, when you can alter your genome so it produces THC endogenously? Pleased

Btw have your read The Biotechnology of Cannabis sativa 2nd edition and Enzyklopädie der Cannabiszucht : Fachbuch der Hanfgenetik? Books that deal heavily with Cannabis biotechnology - something that might interest you. I haven't found the latter book as a pdf - but you may want to buy it - heavy stuff that will be valuable in the future. I think 40€ for the book isn't pricey, since it's written so comprehensively. Science books of that calibre go well for 80€ and more...

All i gotta say is... Really?!? Man sometimes i kinda dig being around right about now. Every time i close my eyes and enjoy being high, i open them to some novel THC technology. I give up trying to keep up, hell i just learned that i like to smoke "flower" more than "concentrate". I'm behind the times, man.

UFO, I'm with you on all points. We've done so far ( for all of our two months of legalization) to deal pretty well with keeping the larger scale industries out, the cigarette tobacco type production and whatnot up here in pnw, but if you haven't seen, you should check out the amazing variety of products on sale in shops. From disposable vape pens to infused soda, it's all so freaking awesome.

Yes, it will be just like wine, and the craft beer industry, up here at least. Mostly small players producing product, working with larger distribution networks. I hope anyway, i really really don't want to see industrial mj/canna/THC production. If they want to make the hell outa of cbd oils from industrial hemp, maybe that's different...

Might get better results if you freeze dry it instead, then you will remove the moisture but keep all of the aromatic flavors and not require a freezer to store. Vaporizers work a lot better when they don't have to vaporize a bunch of water too.

Of course, nobody wants to smoke concentrate. Fresh pressed OJ tastes much better than concentrated OJ, that's why I always buy NFC juice. But then: the price. In the end it boils down to economics. That's why I wrote: dank for the masses. You know, the ugly drunk masses, rallying at Superbowl and Okotberfest. Don't they deserve some cheap dank, so they can mellow out and think about their life? Some concentrate for less violence?

You don't want to spend the time and energy to grow some super lemon haze, just to waste it on drunk Joe Smoe, who vomits after two tokes and throws the joint at his girlfriend, grunting and vomiting some more.

So better shred some industrial hemp and spray it with a cheap THC/CBD solution, put it under gamma rays (no mold) and vacuum pack it in little bags. Now sell these to the drunk masses, so they can think a little about life. In the mean time, take the money you've made and spend it on labs and doctors, so you can figure out how cannabinoids really work on the body. I mean really work, clinical studies, plant studies, advanced labs so to speak. This won't come cheap. Sure, if it's a Monsanto type of company, the public will never see the studies. But how will mom and pop businesses figure out what THC et al. will do to our bodys in the long term? Only if they join forces. A mom and pop MJ union would be my favorite, too.

The future might actually look more like the tomato business than the wine business. You'll have large scale producers selling uniform products at chains and small scale producers selling their varieties on farmers market and of course the home grower, who likes home grown tomatoes. What the consumer then buys depends on his/her budget, time and taste.

If you happen to have one of those "no-frost" freezers, you are already there.
