I take psychedelics to further my understanding (even though it may never end) of what I was born into, or "existed" into. I also think taking psychedelics has and will show me more ways of contributing to the advancement of the human species as a whole... gotta leave something behind Smile
my loopy guess is that t. mckenna is off hopping about hyperspace wielding a butterfly net analog, all the while collecting the most peculiar.

STS is a community for people interested in growing, preserving and researching botanical species, particularly those with remarkable therapeutic and/or psychoactive properties.

Why do I take entheogens?

WHY NOT?

asking why would imply a question with an answer. I'm sure that not a single soul knows a single reason "WHY" anything happens in the world, or "why" they do any thing. You may get some willy-nilly short-sighted egotistically opinionated response, but you will never get an answer. All you will get from asking why is three million other statements, each of which you will reply with the same response: WHY?

WHY? BECAUSE WHY NOT! REASON IS A MASS CULTURAL HALLUCINATION WHICH MEANS NOTHING. DON'T THINK. DO. DON'T WONDER WHY. WORDS AREN'T WORTH ONE BAJILLIONTH OF THE TIME WE SPEND THINKING ABOUT THEM. WORDS DETRACT FROM BEING AND EXPERIENCING THE WILD AND WONDERFUL WORLD AROUND US AND ALL THAT ONE GAINES FROM DWELLING UPON THE MUSINGS OF THE MIND IS DEATH, DOOM AND DECAY AND THE REGRET OF A LIFE WELL-WASTED ON WORDS.
'"ALAS,"said the mouse, "the world is growing smaller every day. At the
beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad
when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have
narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner
stands the trap that I must run into." "You only need to change your direction," said
the cat, and ate it up.' --Franz Kafka

Mainly for two reasons. The first is the blissful feeling that you worked through difficult unconscious problems (those issues that you are not aware of that were troubling you). Like a hurricane that swept through your mind and uncovered the deeper underlying tensions and resistances and forces you to acknowledge and accept them. I always feel liberated and healed after a good session.

The other is the visions of alien machines and worlds and imagery so expansive that I cannot help to wonder if it is really out there. In short, to expand my reality tunnel into something that is more than meets my eye in daily life.

To be honest, at first I took them recreationally, but I quickly came to realize that there's more and deeper things going on. So I take them to learn, help others with what I've learned and hopefully in the process, better myself and others around me. I take them because they gave me the gift of being able to slow down, and see the little things that I used to miss. I take them because I love nature and they are nature.
