Bad news, Canadian friends.

Hallucinogenic salvia set to be banned in Canada

Quote:
OTTAWA – The Conservative government is expected to fulfill a four-year-old promise to add salvia to its list of controlled substances, Global News has learned.

After making the promise in 2011, Health Canada is set to add the sage specifies S. divinorum to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, making it illegal to possess, traffic and produce it.

“We’ve done our due diligence, we’ve done the studies, we know that these are used by young kids as hallucinogens,” Paul Calandra, parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, said in an interview.

“They aren’t healthy, they’re not safe, and that’s why we are moving to listing these as banned drugs.”

Salvia is found in a powerful Mexican plant that can cause hallucinations, memory loss and anxiety when smoked.

The high only lasts several minutes, and most people smoke it only once or twice, says Peter Addy, an associate research scientist at the Yale University School of Medicine.

“It hits you almost instantly. It crosses the blood brain barrier and it leads to a very intense and short-acting experience as opposed to eating or drinking it the way that it’s used traditionally,” said Addy, who’s been studying the drug for five years.

“It can be kind of anxiety- and fear-inducing if you do it under the wrong circumstances or if you’re not really prepared for it.”

Salvia is currently regulated by Health Canada as a “natural health product” – but no one is licensed to sell it.

Years after an accident in British Columbia and a 2006 death in Delaware, the government says it is finally acting.

The Liberals say there isn’t enough evidence to prove salvia is harmful or has long-term health effects.

“The problem about this government is that it makes decisions based on some kind of ideological whim, and not based on good evidence,” said health critic Hedy Fry.

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association says criminalizing salvia isn’t the answer either.

“We don’t protect youth by criminalizing them. Putting youth in jail for the use of this substance is clearly counter-productive,” said policy director Micheal Vonn.

But as the Conservatives gear up for the election, a source says salvia will be added to the list of controlled substances any day now.

Hope this isn't the shape of things to come in the US.

Blessings

That is really sad to hear Sad .

However, I do not think that the US will go in the same direction as easily.

I'm not sure about the Canadian CDSA, but the US CSA says that to place a substance in Schedule I it either has to be listed on an international treaty (UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances) or shown to have "a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision."

You might say, "well DMT certaintly doesn't qualify for that," but remember, DMT is on an international treaty and so they can essentially schedule it without considering any of those factors.

The DEA demonstrates that a substance has "a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision" by comparing it to other substances. This is how 5-MeO-DMT got scheduled. Even though they could not show that it had a high potential for abuse, they said "well DMT is Schedule I and this seems similar to DMT, so we'll put it there."

Salvia, on the other hand, cannot really be compared to any scheduled drugs. The salvinorins' activity is quite unique for a hallucinogenic substance, and especially after Leonhart has stepped down, they are gonna have a more difficult time scheduling it.

Worst case though, it's made schedule III like the other hallucinogens. Max three years for possession...

Canadian gov may need a push into salvia-land so they know what they're dealing with! Twisted Evil

It would be against the rules to suggest salvia darts against idiotic politicking... so I won't mention it Thumbs up

I've heard of this Harper guy, he sounds like a real jobsworth. Conservatives are a worldwide pest, not plants.

Music is alive and in your soul. It can move you. It can carry you. It can make you cry! Make you laugh. Most importantly, it makes you feel! What is more important than that?

Man, this is sad news! People around the world sure do love swinging that ban hammer around, don't they? It reminds me of that opening scene in Pineapple Express:

"...We've reached
a final conclusion on Item 9...

Illegal!!!"

I feel your pain, Canada. Salvia was banned in my state, and even though it is legal in its naturally occurring state, no one is willing to risk shipping a whole plant to me (understandably). Sad

I would be dead if it wasn't for this plant. It is the most healing plant I have ever ingested. Go ahead, try to take my medicine away Big grin I have a sizable Salvia garden that I have no plans on discontinuing any time soon. I have kilos upon kilos of leaf; more than enough for several lifetimes.

Go ahead and make your ridiculous laws. As Terence said "it looks like Joe Plant". There aren't many identifying features. Good luck enforcing such stupid legislation. Thumbs down

It's insane to see governments rushing to make recreational drugs illegal while weed is slowly becoming legal again everywhere. The history of weed is the future of salvia. How can governments have so little foresight?! As they are acknowledging that they were wrong in the past, they continue to make the same mistakes in the present.
Every day I am thankful that I was introduced to psychedelic drugs.
