Hi all,

Can I just eat the cactus raw?, after cutting off the spines, I just hold my breath and eat it raw, is it possible?.

Thanks.

I can't... and wouldn't, but I'm sure there are some stronger characters who can.

What's the grossest thing you ever ate?

It's probably close.

I've seen tribal people eat Peyote but traditionally San Pedro was drunk as tea - you'd have to eat a lot of it to get the desired effect. I have however heard of a few people eating it and some even cooked it with lime juice and such to spice it up a bit.

Juicing it would be easier - if you have a juicer. Some people I know prefer this to the tea.

About 4 or 5 years back, a few friends and I chomped down maybe 1-2 feet of raw San Pedro between us. I believe we cut it into stars and definitely despined it. We tried to isolate outer flesh from skin as best possible while still retaining time efficiency. Ate it with hot sauce, limes and salt from the Mexican food shop nearby. I think chased with OJ too, but I can't remember. I think I was able to eat more than my friends, and actually got a pretty cool trip out of it, maybe comparable to 1 gram of cubensis. The effort was heroic though, and not casual. Funny looking back however, resin has given me the worst stomach cramps, compared to eating it raw and even teas. Extracts work best for me I've found. I'd eat something high potency like bridgesii or bridgesii mutant forms, which have minimal spines.

I ate a decent amount of cactus raw once(the same amount i would use for a fully functional tea[of a tested strain]) - it was not fun at all getting it down.
no effects to speak of really other than feeling bloated with slime.

It is very bitter, it is so bitter there isn't really anything I can compare it to.

I take that back, and this may be a good exercise to mentally prepare yourself for exactly how bitter it is.

Do you like beer? If not this is an even better practice scenario for you. Go get a six pack of some India Pale Ale, any brand ought to do just fine. Go ahead and get it ice cold or have it warm, it won't matter for this exercise. Slowly sip on it and swish it around in your mouth until you have consumed one whole beer.

If you can't get through the beer you have a snowball's chance in Hades to eat raw cactus my friend. You don't have to chew beer or deal with a slimy texture either.

I can drink IPA but I'm not going to say I enjoy it. I know what to expect and it still turns my face inside out, lol!! Newcastle makes a great Pale Ale, try the Caledonian batch while you can still get it. Pleased

Best of luck to you.

^^^ I hear that! IPA is quite funky when it comes to the flavor department!

Now, cactus is pretty raunchy and there really is no way around it unless you extract it! However, the flavor is really a right of passage. If you can handle that taste, you can handle just about anything flavor related. I always boil it via tea or extract via 69ron's d-limo tek.

I've heard (have not tried) that if you do not reduce the tea down to a shot (or similar small amount) or so than it is slightly more pleasant to drink. But then you have a larger volume to consume!

I cannot imagine trying to eat a whole dose of cactus raw. It seems like a daunting process. The first time I ever made tea I tried a bit of raw cactus (to see what it tasted like and to make sure I had no negative reactions to it) and it tasted like a juicy yet bitter cucumber. It wasn't obnoxiously terrible in such a small quantity (one regular human bite size Laughing ) but I don't think I could ever eat enough raw material to feel anything except nausea!

I have eaten the dried powdered flesh by swallowing it down and chasing it with lemonade as well as mango juice. Best on an empty stomach... It will expand in your stomach and you will puke, but after that the stomach calms down. If you can hold it down for at least a half hour it's an effective but probably not very efficient ROI.

I don't quite get this discussion. Just make tea out of it. What could possibly be the benefit of eating it raw?

Well, firstly the huichol's eat it raw, and maybe get some of the extra alkaloids, the other thing is please understand, I don't want to make a mess in the kitcken, because the other people in the house will say why are you taking cactus?.

So there's that. Also, like, if the huichol's eat it (and not just the huichols, but in this video this westener eats the cactus, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU1Ham0iJ3I

The Huichols traditional medicine is Peyote, not San Pedro.... Peyote is much smaller - for San Pedro you would have to eat a giant piece of cactus that would be tough to consume all of even if it tasted good! With Peyote you just need a small amount of material (stronger per ounce, but grows much much slower and smaller).

We are all talking about different cactus's.... Wink Most people work with San Pedro because it is legal, grows faster, is more common ect....

I have never heard of any tribe that eats San Pedro - the traditional way is to make tea and drink it.

With Peyote some make tea and some eat it - the taste is supposed to be really difficult. I would eat it if that is how it was offered to me in ceremony, but if I was doing my own ceremony I would make tea.

Lets also not forget that us humans aint so great at breaking down the cellulose in plant matter and cacti are particularly tough so hot water extractions could even be considered more efficient, especially if done thoroughly.

The taste of raw, freshly sliced, alkaloid-rich Bridgesii may best be compared to a slimy decomposing cucumber with a super duper amount of Bitter Yuckiness added to it that's sure to make your stomach do a backflip or three as you try to wolf it down. Gagging, projectile vomiting, nausea and one of the most revolting tastes you will sample in your lifetime await those who sample the raw flesh of achuma. Bite after nauseating bite, every gulp chased with a generous slurry of OJ to rid the palate of this unfathomably wretched taste, only to do it all over and over and over again until finally the plate of pure blech standing before you turns so snotty you cannot fathom taking more. Exasperated and exilarated from enduring such a challenge, the real trip down gastrointestinal lane hits you full force in the face nd its downhill from there.

To this day the taste of trichs haunt me; the endless hours of stomach pain and random bouts of projectile vomit spewing from my pie hole afterwards was absolutely terrible to say the least and the moderate mescaline experience which ensued was tainted and ruined by the sad state the cactus had made of my stomach. Please, for the love of all that is sacred, do NOT try to eat any psychoactive cactus raw. Spending a couple days extracting alkaloids beats spending a couple days feeling like an atom bomb of pure bitter fury just exploded all over your digestive tract.
'"ALAS,"said the mouse, "the world is growing smaller every day. At the
beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad
when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have
narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner
stands the trap that I must run into." "You only need to change your direction," said
the cat, and ate it up.' --Franz Kafka

Thank you all very very much for the replies, great help. Thank you.

I tried eating Trichocereus Pachanoi and it was beautiful, the taste was sweet, no problems getting it down, but of course its very small (5cm),

But, I have 5 others. If I ate them all in one go, would be enough?.

Thanks.

You can totally eat cactus. If u experience the taste sensations instead of reacting to them it's completely beautiful. I often have a few bites while brewing a tea and the connection is there. More the energy of pedro less the mescaline trip

I am surprised by the posts in this thread. I always thought the hardcore catcophiles here ate their cactus raw. In my limited experience, I ate some pedro when I cut out the base rot from my (then) cuttings. I managed to choke down a few inches of the plant until the taste became too unbearable. I then tried to make a smoothie out of it but it was completely disgusting. I could barely drink any of it.

But yea, like others have said you have to eat so much it's nearly impossible to fit in your stomach. I would definitely try raw cactus again in very small amounts but I would not try to make an event out of it. For this I am more interested in San Pedro's medicinal properties. A slice of cactus a day keeps the doctor away?

When the time finally comes to harvest some cactus I will be all over this forum trying to figure the best way to do it. There seems to be no easy way, which is unfortunate.

Yes you may eat the San Pedro cactus raw as well as Peyote.
In my first experience with Trichocereus Peruvianus, I had one fresh bluish foot-long cutting I ordered from a vendor. I had initially planned to grow it, but then I ate it.

Tasted like a cucumber covered in mucus. Actually not too bad, obviously a tad bitter due to alkaloids.
For best results, I de-spined the cactus, removed the outer latex and cut up the cactus into stars. Seeing as this would be a mouth-full, I diced it up even more. I thought about San Pedro salsa...

So I sat on this beach and ate the fresh diced seven-pointed psychedelic cucumber while sucking on limes.
After hanging out for two hours and feeling mildly "stoned", we proceeded to leave and I was given a ride home.
Three hours later the effects gently began caressing my head and body. Felt dreamy and reminiscent of a gram+ of Psilocybe Cubensis. Visual waves came and went, reds and greens, tracers from ornamental lights hanging in my room. Overall, I was introduced to the healing medicinal value San Pedro has to offer. I'm thankful for that experience.

These brews do not taste bad at all usually, neither does the cacti. Coffee tastes weird to me still...
It is a powerful spirit entering a small body.
Though most like to remark on the horrid taste. What is taste in regard to entheogens?
I feel as though they are tasting me and swallowing everything I am often times. Full surrender.

Brew your cactus for 15-20 hours. Anywhere from 50-200 dried grams. 2-4ft fresh.
The magic carpet ride will ensue!
