From WikipediaAutonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, or cognitive stimuli. The nature and classification of the ASMR phenomenon is controversial,[1] with strong anecdotal evidence to support the phenomenon but little or no scientific explanation or verified data."

I was reading a recent issue of Fortean Times and did a double take and gasped once I realized what a small essay near the back of the magazine was about. As long as I can remember, I've had this feeling, and have NEVER ONCE MENTIONED IT TO ANYONE. Not once, in 46 years in this planet, if you're reading this, you're the first person I've ever told about this.It was my secret, these 'braingasms' that would occur, from certain very specific stimuli. I used to bring art books, comics, my own drawings etc to school for the sole purpose of letting someone else pore over them. I'd sit a little off to the side and just... Get high!

Every drug experience I've ever has was chasing THIS FEELING. I'm amazed that it exists and just... Wow. I actually have thought my entire life if I ever divulged it and was say, criticized or worse, humiliated over it, that it would die and I'd never be able to feel it again.

Since I've grown older, I've been able to cultivate it a little. Giving someone a cigarette and watching them smoke it works well, a haircut is amazing, if the person doing the cutting doesn't indoor insist on talking, lol. And someone checking out one of my drawings is good and someone reading what I wrote is best. L.o. freaking l, this is a breakthrough for me realizing what this is, it could have implications with helping to understand and completely deal with my addiction issues, and "coming out" is incredibly liberating!

So, how many of you experience this too? If this is a disorder, freaking diagnose me, I'll own this one!

I was just talking with an old friend about this EXACT same thing. I've never actually looked it up and classified it, and it has been a strange sort of embarrassing? I guess I could say embarrassing secret I kept from everyone but those closest to me.

I remember when I was in grade 2, I had just moved to a new city and I gave a pretty girl I liked one of my favorite marbles. I had tingles for hours after that. I just thought that was how you felt when you loved someone Laughing But yeah, most people don't feel that good from a simple kindness on the playground lol.

I derive immense satisfaction from watching someone eat a meal I prepared. When someone enjoyed my writing or was moved by my singing or an instrument I'm playing. No surprise that I've worked in restaurants for years and have been playing in bands for even longer!

I was always drawn to perform for people. I will admit I'm absolutely addicted to the feeling of performing on stage for people. I've been floored on many occasions by massive waves of euphoric tingling before, during, and after playing on stage. I love the crowd, and the more they get into it, the more pleasure I experience. But I don't think it's limited to crowds, or the number of people I may be connecting with on some emotional level. Some of the most intense pleasure I've experienced came from intimate sessions, one on one with someone. For me music is completely entangled with this "ASMR", there's no question.

This is a strange sort of realization for me as well. I've struggled quite a bit with addiction issues and you're right, it's been chasing that feeling. Putting a label on it doesn't particularly matter, but knowing you're not alone does.

It is an absolutely amazing feeling though, isn't it. I wonder if people who experience this sort of phenomenon are more prone to addictive behaviors...?

Yeah I get that all-over tingly euphoric head sensation when I come to a realisation about something, or have a conversation with someone and they get exactly what I mean or vice versa, its a nice feeling! I would hazard a guess that it has its roots in the serotonergic system as I have had that rush from MD also.

Yep, this is where I get it naturally. I have to be listening to something orchestral or classical or just something that hits my soul then I'll feel it. I even just closed my eyes and thought of an experience just now and I can bring it on.

Interestingly enough I only became aware of the triggers and developed a frame of reference due to previous MDMA use.

Does anyone else ever get a lightheaded feeling in their head (almost a spacial change) along with a distinct change of feeling in their hands almost like the gravity has increased suddenly? It almost feels like my hands are holding an object like a 5 lb wheel of cheese. The feeling is powerful but fleeting, only lasts a moment of two. Almost feels like my body is in another place physically for a brief moment in time. This has been happening to me every few months ever since I was a child. It does not seem to be related to drugs in any way, although I have felt it a few times while on Cannabis and it did seem more intense but lasted the same short amount of time. Does anyone else ever experience anything like this?

I just had this feeling; this is why i came here just now;
and i find this thread. Shocked

Yeah i have that feeling very often, sometimes 10 times per day.

Its a signal from higher self, whenever i see/read/hear the absolute truth, the feeling tunes in and tells me: here, listen, this is important, you need do get it.

The feeling is the strongest if i contemplate my inevitable death and the one universal force which holds everything together.
But the trigger can be anything, a touch, a whisper, a song, a sunset or the sight of an rotting animal corpse on the roadside.

I associate it with the 3 upper chakras.
Pure kundalini energy.
And yeah, its definatly contagious.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I'm not a K practitioner, but know a little about how it works and feels. For me, k manifests as am electric, crackling feeling of POWER. AMSR is much gentler. And I'm not sure what chakra to associate it with, IMO, probably a heart center thing. It seems bound within concepts like love and sharing.

Not sure if that's the same thing. I get goosebumps from listening to music to, shivers that run up the spine and nape of the neck, making the hair on my arms stand up. While that's a pure emotional response, it's more "mundane" than the " braingasm" which is the purest form of euphoria that exists.

I am quite certain I've experienced what you all are describing.

Music would most definitely be the #1 stimuli of this for me then. But it can't just be any music at any time. It has to be that song that "hits" me at just the time I want it. There are definitely ones which do it more than others though.

Like the Northern Exposure album. I get this feeling a lot while listening to that.

But I don't just get it with music. I've experienced it in many times of pleasure.
