So I'm working with a gallon glass jar, but every time I try and use it it wants to leak a little at least once. Quite frustrating. And messy. Has anyone had good experience with a particular kind of jar? I need a new one.

I'm fond of Pyrex myself, but I've seen where others are using beer bottles, wine bottles etc. Be creative, I don't use pickle jars anymore as I had the bottom of one pop off right after looking at the Crack that developed and it was full of black basic solution.

I personally use a glass gallon wine jug.

I have used juice bottles with metal lids, mason jars, bottles. and a number of other vessels.

In my experience few vessels are completely airtight/watertight. And even if they are, eventually they seem to give out.

Whenever I had issues with leaking, it would usually be during the shuffles.

I would wrap my vessel in a towel, shuffle more gently, and for a longer period.

But of course the idea is to not have anything that leaks in the first place!!
Fill it with water and give it a shake test before using it.

I went through so many poorly executed extraction processes' with mediocre vessels before I just bit the bullet and got some proper lab glassware. A 1lt and 2lt bottle with screw top and a 500ml flask, 10, 20, 50ml glass syringes and a turkey baster. Most of it is Pyrex or equiv lab quality borosilicate glass.

It probably cost around $200.00 in all, but the results you get are night and day. Makes extracting easier and safer as you don't have to worry about seals leaking, bottles melting, cracking etc. You can expose them to a wide range of temperatures and pressures without hesitation.

Jars suck. They work but you end up having to use ridiculous amounts of solvent to avoid sucking up basic solution.
I havn't found a perfect alternative yet. But what i use now works much better for small scale extractions.
A 1L pyrex boiling flask with a neck & a glass stopper. Round or flat bottom work well.
You have to make sure to uncap & release pressure before shaking & stop to release pressure a time or two while shaking, the stopper has popped out on me twice.
But it works extremely well with 900ml water/lye/mhrb mix & 100ml solvent brought up into the neck 1/4 way up.

I've noticed no yeild loss & gone up to 70g mhrb, 70g salt, 70g lye, 100ml heptane via cybs tek.
Upping the mhrb 5g each time to see exactly how much will work in 900ml before it gets too thick.
