pressure cooker? Options

hello all.

read some things, was cooking some caapi vine and mhrb today and a thought occured: is there any merit to putting the stuff in
canning jars and pressure cook them? can get to a much higher temp that way. or has anyone tried it? thanks, smee.

It actually won't get much higher, at 15psi the water will boil at 122C. And then you've got to consider is it true stainless steel? Will any acids present leach metals out of the pressure cooker? IMO its not worth it.

well i was thinking to just split the plant/acid water up into 6 quart jars or so and then put those in the pressure canner, so the metal wouldnt be a problem (since i just discovered the pressure cooker is aluminum not stainless Sad ) so it would just be 120c instead of 100c boiling, but someone told me it is the volume of water thats important, a la THP, not the temp, so it probably wouldnt be much difference.

A pressure cooker is overkill.

If your MHRB is powdered, then there isn’t a need to even boil it. I do extractions using 4 hot water soaks of about 30 minutes each (just long enough for the bark powder to settle) and get excellent yields.

Unless you’re using poorly shredded or whole bark, there is no advantage to long, high temperature boils. It is a persistent myth that longer and hotter is better. Same applies to caapi – with shredded caapi I do 4 gentle boils of 30 minutes each and get excellent yield. No need to do the “standard” three boils of three hours each.

Aluminium will react with the acid so don't do it. gibran2 is on the right track, if your bark is already powdered you don't need 2hr boils, but anything less than a powder will require higher heat and longer time because the alkaloids can't migrate into the solution as easily as they can from a powder.

3hrs is probably overkill but its not like a boil takes effort, you can put the lid on and let it sit in the hot water post boil overnight if need be. 1.5hrs is more than enough.

Why can't you cook it without the mason jars?

I have a Stainless Steel pot and I read every thread on here about PC's no one talks about jarless stainless steel pc'ing

What about the powder blocking up the steam hole? Likely?
