The alternative to chicken wire are thorns.

Accualy mimosa hostilis works very good as an impenetrable hedge for home security, or to block people from walking through your alley way.

Good quality Syrian rue (Peganum harmala) for an incredible price!

I started 6 this year and 4 survived. They are still so extremely small (3inches!!)I wonder if the well known and trusted vendor sent the right seeds or not. The surviving crew has survived two traumas involving a squirrel and a rat where they were all de-potted. On finding them I scooped the babies up and lovingly re-potted them. I live in FDA zone 8 climate so they are inside now in a window supplemented by 5600K lights. I have gone as far as to cover the pots with Chicken wire so nothing can rip them out.

I may seek out some Bundleflower because I can just let it go outside all year.

Do they have thorns that resemble rose bush thorns? They should also have reddish hairy structures on the small stems. Perhaps your soil lacks the fungal symbiot the roots require, this could lead to slow growth. You can try planting a pea seed next to each plant then cut it off when it's 2 or 3 inches tall. Btw I have one which is a year old and 2 inches tall so that does happen.

They do have very small thorns that I can see in a macro photo. I will post a pic in this thread soon. I am amazed at their resilience! Twice they were knocked rootbare and lived! The chicken wire in to keep rodents, should they get in, from knocking them over or digging them out again. A freaking rat got in and knocked every pot off my table, killed a tomato I was overwintering and chewed a potted flower from my mom-in-law. Rat bastard...Shocked

Marijuana, LSD, psilocybin, and DMT they all changed the way I see

They are very resilient. I have 2 nice sized ones in my yard. Before I put them there they were in very large pots, the root balls probably weighed 100 lb each. When I planted them, I couldn't get the 2nd one out of the pot so I kind of held it upside down to shake it out. The whole root ball fell out and crushed it. I just fixed him up straight and hoped for the best. Didn't even phase him.

When the same one was about a foot tall a storm came through and broke his trunk. I tied him up like a tomato plant and it regenerated.

During the summer these little green inchworm looking caterpillars come and feast on the tender shoots. They just grow many more branches.

One time I covered him with plastic for a frost and the thorns got caught in the plastic, mangled his branches all up. Didn't phase him.

They've also been through 3 or 4 frosts with no problem, still green and growing new leaves.

Very tough trees

Glad to hear this.
