Neurologically DMT along with Psilocybin has been proven with fMRI studies to reduce activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN - Involves integrating different kinds of internal thoughts) along with the Medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPfc - associated with theory of mind) I believe this to be the cause of my own subjective effects of "Retardation" in the sense of retarding the brains fundamental capacity for strict logical analysis of incoming information.

I am a fellow who keeps a close watch on my own mental states including: REM Sleep, Attention, Comprehensional Abilities, Spatial Awareness, Clarity of Thought, Physical Energy, Mood & Emotions.

After being subjected to DMT & NMT I have felt a major disability to comprehend words and sentences and control my mind on tasks that require multiple intergration of many factors (ie analysising story outlines) for about 30 minutes after vaporizing. That being said I feel enormous clarity in my spatial perception & mood as well as a profound ability to expansively analyse concepts creatively outside of rational, linear methods. I might say this is worth it if I feel so blue and stale from the monotony of the world.

I have also felt a substantial decrease in my ability to go into deep sleep as well as a irradic REM sleep patterns as many people have reported on this forum from pharma & ayahuasca. Not as bad as Marijuana but noticable. These types of sleep disorders inevitably lead to confusion, irratability, mental fog & general disease if not corrected after a few nights. There really is nothing like a good sleep to restore unconscious mental processes to there original potential.

To leave on a positive not, DMT/NMT produces an increase in imagination, creative thinking, positivity & clarity. The choice it then leaves is... What is worth more, your books or your trips?

Reduction in REM? If anything I've noticed in myself and many others here that tryptamines and harmalas seem to enhance dream life, not the opposite. I guess my experience is mostly at odds with your own.

Are you mostly new to psychedelics or DMT? Reason I ask is because I noticed that, say with LSD, my first few journeys did overwhelm my normal left-brained modes of consciousness and I wasn't as articulate as normal, since I was overwhelmed by other realms of consciousness. Overtime though (and with mushrooms from the start), I noticed that I could still usually speak fine if not far better during and especially after the experience. And on lower doses of DMT that don't dissolve me into the hyperspatial fold, my language and reasoning abilities are far superior to normal - but in a different way than sober consciousness. Instead of being hyperfocused on one thing at a time, vaster idea/perceptual labyrinths can be understood at once in a more expansive way.

With DMT most people are too far into these experiences to even bother with these lower dimensional forms of communication and linear thought. I don't see that as retardation though, just accessing different states of being that we normally occupy, which you can come back from and integrate to make your overall state of mind improve, even these left brained abilities like linear thought and language.

<Ringworm>hehehe, it's all fun and games till someone loses an "I"

I do affirm that there is vaster idea/perceptual labyrinths as you say but I was hoping for it to have a nootropic effect in order to help me take information IN, but I see now it is only effective for ANALYSIS of that information.

hey,

I read your articles and what I was wondering was how long does the effect of the reduced activity hold on, and was this measured during, directly after or much later? I for instance have not noticed any retardation on my part (i might be a retard so there is no noticeable deferenceVery happy ) in the week following the use.
However I can feel mentally tired from the trip for a day or two. Then this is usually followed by a period of increased creativity for one or two weeks. And then after 3 or 4 weeks I re-dose a couple of days in a row, starting the circle all over.
This leads me to think that the positive enhancement i get from dmt lasts around 3 or 4 weeks.
Also I believe that my brain is more in sink, thoughts are less erratic and more centered. Complex problems become more manageable and less stressful.
But then again this might also be that I'm getting older and with that more experienced at managing complex processes, but in my case there is now way of knowing I have been going through this circle for years.

Well just some thoughts on the subject

take care
