I germinated these mimosa seeds mid-June and wanted to share the progress with you guys! They're adorable plants and exciting to grow. I've extracted DMT before but the sources for bark are disappearing and becoming more greedy; I'm afraid nature isn't prepared for mass consumption of her most sacred lifeforms. I know a lot of people here are already well aware of the human impact on these plants. It feels great to be growing your own.

I soaked the seeds for an hour in hot water, then lightly folded them in a damp paper towel in a bowl covered with saran wrap. Had about 75% germination rate with this method after 5 days. I then carefully planted the seedlings in a biodegradable cup with a soil mix of 30% composted manure, 40% backyard topsoil, 30% vermiculite. Two are growing very well, another is half as strong and another is pretty weak.

After a couple weeks I potted the cups into a larger pot so there would be plenty of root space. In the larger pots I just used a store bought potting soil. I initially covered the top with moss, and then overwatered them like a noob. Well it created the perfect environment for fungus and fungus gnats. When it was clear they weren't going away I replaced the top layer of moss with coarse sand. The sand should be a good additive to the soil for mimosas--helps dry out the soil; keeps larva from crawling out and gnats from nesting in the soil. I killed dozens of gnats every day for the past month and eventually draped some yellow sticky rolls across the rim of the pots. That seemed to help a lot, there were hundreds that got stuck to the rolls before I removed them earlier for the pictures. Don't overwater your plants!!! And you won't have to hassle with all that lol.

I have them on a shelf under 6500k fluorescent lighting, where they will stay until they outgrow it. But I plan to keep them indoors because I live in US zone 5a, so outdoor planting isn't an option. It's cute how they close their leaves at night. The stems are developing little bristles and the leaves get 1 more pair each new set, with the latest being quad sets; a wonderful surprise. Smile

Thanks for reading and please feel free to advise me if you have more experience, or ask questions if curious about anything. I read a cool quote here recently that said the best time to plant a tree was 100 years ago, the 2nd best time is now! Wink

Nice job man! I've been waiting to see somebody post a semi guide like this with pictures. I've been having a tough time getting my seeds to germinate but I've never tried soaking them in hot water as I've heard people mention now. I will try this soon and hopefully they will germinate!

Good vibes to you and your plants!

Definitely not alone Big grin I have one large plant maybe tep feet tall and then seeds germinating as we speak. Such a thrilling plant... I love how they literally go to sleep at night Laughing

I dig you medium composition... sounds comfy for the little buggers!

Too cool people! I will try and post some pictures of my babies layers.

Haha wow! How old is that? Are there ways to top them and keep them growing bushier instead of taller? Also, what size pot do you have that beast in? Thanks for sharing Smile

Yea, the seeds are so small that idk how well someone could nick them with a razor, so I think the only trick is soaking them. After they inflate and you wrap them in a damp paper towel, make sure to keep that paper towel wet. I probably would have had more germinate, but I was so focused on the ones that already sprouted that I let the paper towel dry out which likely killed the stragglers.
There's a bunch more info and better guides in the ethnobotanical section here too.

Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing Smile How old are those? I can't wait until the stems get woody like that.

Yea, they appear pretty intelligent. Despite being completely dependent on the indoor lighting, they have their own circadian rhythm and sleep with the Earth. I tried fooling them with different light cycles but eventually just adjusted it to their schedule which is about 13 hours on, 11 off.

My mimosa wants to wave and say hi with an update. Latest news is the leaf sixlets and the first thorns. It's also wising up to the light, leaning toward the side with more. Currently it's under a 4ft, 2x T8 daylight fluorescent ballast. I've been eyeing a different 4ft ballast with 4x T5HO daylight fluorescents. It puts out more than twice as many lumens, but is 4x more expensive. Anyone know if it's worth it or whether I should upgrade to a real heavy duty light like a metal halide or something?

Was hard to get a clear closeup of the thorn. It's very firm and the plant getting the most breeze from the fan in the room has 3 of them at the level of the air current. I've heard it's good to tickle, wiggle, and blow on them to keep them focused on strong stems and roots. Otherwise they supposedly grow like a vine the first year or so.

Also had to roll out a new fly tape to combat the fungus gnats. A few days without it and they were trying to settle back in. I never really see them anymore but apparently they still come around.

I'm not sure when is the 'right' time actually Razz
But weather here is kinda sub-tropical (no winter or 4 season). so i can transplant anytime.
I planted it on mother earth when I feel it can handle the weather Razz (sun/rain/wind).
I never have experience planting this, Just the feeling and tried and error Razz
One thing you need to consider is that you have to be careful during transplant, put the pot outside to make it get comfortable with the new environment, then transplant, to prevent 'shock' Razz
And take care of the roots when digging.
This is my "un-professional" opinions.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize you just keep yours by the window. Yea they seem pretty flexible to light levels. The outdoor/window specimens seem stronger, but I've also read they don't like direct sun and prefer diffused light. They're growing more quickly each day and as Jamie said will soon outgrow the shelving and light. Still not sure what lighting to upgrade it to, though. Does anyone know whether I should be focusing on more lumens or a stronger light in general, like a hps / metal halide?

We've just finished winter here so It's spring here in oz ATM and we've had mainly sunny 25 degree days , we've had a few days that are overcast but not that cool , it's really starting to pump now it's getting alittle warmer though as icon said it will soon outgrow the pot and window sill it sits now but I've a nice spot picked out for the little guy on my veranda !Thumbs up
I'm alittle concerned if I was to plant in my yard how it would handle the winter next year ! Although it gets around 7-10 degrees at it coldest days were I am , but I'll cross that path when I come to it !! Cool

I'm glad this is inspiring others; it feeds back. Thanks for the encouragement guys! Looking beautiful, Earthwalker! Thumbs up

They are delightful and easy to care for. I water them every few days when they look thirsty, and the lights are controlled by a Hydrofarm Timer. The timer has seriously become my best buddy. I did a lot of research on timers for lights and I'm very please with it, is one of the best purchases I've made, for only $20.

My smallest actually withered and died several weeks ago. I think it was a problem with the initial over watering, wasn't as strong as the rest to survive. But the other 3 are doing well. The largest two grow fast enough that they're a renewable interest I look forward to every morning.

Can anyone explain what is happening at this stage of its growth that causes the stem to turn red? Two of them are still green and growing thorns; this one has no thorns but is turning red now. Smile

I know they'll eventually all be red n thorny, but they seem to have different priorities... different sexes?
