The room itself is pretty chilly, is that too low of a temeprature?

If so, I was considering buying some tea lights and making that room heater with two clay pots.

65F is a bit chilly to grow cubes.

cakes will colonize in temps between 60-70f but it will take more time for the mycelium to develop under those conditions. you should get them around 70-75F.

Yes I made myself a little heater to blow the warm air into the chamber and it worked immediately and wonderfully.

Humidity at 95%+?

the humidity is not very important for incubation with pf jars. you'll be fine, the warmer the faster but it's safe not to go much higher than 80F because the growing mycelium creates a bit of heat itself.

i've actually got 4 jars of golden teachers on day 23 Very happy

they are just in my laundry room up on a shelf above the head. That little room has the dryer and the water heater in it, so it's a few degrees warmer in there, working nicely. Sometimes the door is left open and some ambient light comes in - i don't even really focus on it, but it does stay dark most of the time.

hope this helps Very happy

Sorry if I wasnt clear, Im past the incubation stage, cakes were birthed a few days ago and are in a fruiting chamber and I mist 3-4 times a day maintaining 94-95% humidity according to my weather station thingy that I have in the box.

oh, then yea, sounds like everything is on point.

did you add the holes to the bottom of the chamber?

when you mist, don't forget to fan the chamber for a few seconds each time to get a fresh exchange of gases in there.

do you see any pinning or primordia yet? are you using perlite in your chamber? fine or coarse?

i'll be following this grow! keep us(me) updated Very happy

I did add holes yes Smile I do see some fuzzy stuff growing atop the cakes it looks like so far out/thru the vermiculite layer.

The perlite is coarse but does have some fine mixed in it seems. I drained the dust out best I could Very happy

fuzziness or "fuzzy feet" is a common sign indicating a lack of fresh air exchange. fan a couple times more than you usual do and take a look at roger rabbit's instructions on how to build your sgfc. you need to follow the tek to the t in order to get better results.

Even with like 40+ holes for air to move throughout the chamber fanning is still vital?

And theres no real shrooms pinning yet, I do see fuzz on the cake tho. Like it looks like more mycelium growing almost thru the vermiculite layer. This is bad??

I have another question, how much misting is too much? I dont want to overdo it but obviouslty dont want to underdo it either.

My mini weather station said inbox temps were 75 with 93% humidity. I misted in the morning, at lunch, just now and I will likely again at bed. is 4-5 times a day misting bad? the cakes arent soaked by any means I just try to get them around each cake and soak the perlite and walls of the box.

no, kaaos is referring to fuzzy mycelium growth at the bottom of larger fruits(shrooms). i don't think he realized you just birthed the cakes. the mycelium can continue to grow in the birthing chamber, that's all you're seeing.

you can fan extra in the meantime for peace of mind. just keep in mind that most beginners have problems with over misting rather than under misting, and not enough FAE.

Since you went and added the holes(all 6 sides, correct), your FAE should be good with minimal fanning -- 3-4x daily. Remember the main point of fanning is to basically swap out all the air that's in there for fresh air all at once. So doing this spaced evenly throughout the day provides best result.

you should start to see some tiny pins at day 5.

Very happy

40 holes is nothing for an SGFC. i would suggest your watch Roger Rabbits video and build a proper one for your next grow. 40 holes is like 1 side of an SGFC.

AH I just found randomly before reading the the shotgun terrarium. I didnt drill a lot of holes because I didnt want humidity to escape too fast. He drills a lot of holes haha.

So yea next time Ill add more holes.

I still have a question about how much misting. When I mist, Im sure I get each cake entirely. The top of each cake is noticeably damp at the verm layer, but not soaked.

Is this sufficient? I just want to be sure Im not overdoing it. Is it really, just a LIGHT mist per cake or should it be done enough to see that the verm layer has been moistened, but isnt pooling.

So Im on day 3.5 right now, the temperature in the box is about 73-76 degrees, I do a 12/12 light schedule with an LED bar, and I mist 3-4 times a day and fan 4-6 times a day.

Im going to buy an analog hygrometer today

Im getting kind of concerned because I still dont see any signs of pinning Sad

How does this look to those of you who know

It's fine not to see pins until 5 - 7 days. Some take longer than others. They look fine right now.

But coming to hear that you didn't do the full 2 x 2 grid with the holes, then definitely keep the misting to a maximum, at least 6 times daily if you can.

I highly doubt you're going to have trouble keeping the humidity up. Remember one of the top beginner mishaps is not enough FAE. Your misting sounds fine for now.

Thumbs up
