Hi all.

Due to me being new I thought I'd just ask.......

On several forums I see the use of SWIM etc, is this actually required? from a legal stand point it offers no protection what so ever. Should a legal issue arise the fact you used SWIM would be of no benefit what so ever in a court of law from my experience.

I notice this used far more on American sites due to the ever growing fear of the DEA etc. As an English user this is far less a concern.

If I choose to do so can I just talk normally......the use of SWIM seems to suggest to people they can say what they like and replace I with SWIM and its totally fine. This is not the case. I suppose the point of my post is a mix of "I don't want to use SWIM because its pointless" as well as hopefully making people think about exactly how they word posts so as to keep all the users a little safer should law enforcement decide to cause a problem.

I may of rambled on there slightly, apologies. Hopefully it reads as I intended.

Thanks folks.

The use of SWIM is heavily discouraged here and disliked by almost all members.

It only serves to make posts very difficult to read and does absolutely nothing to protect you legally.

This site has been extremely well setup with your privacy and security in mind.

My gnome told me he could SWIM, so I threw him in the next door neighbors' pool. He sunk like a brick.

Maybe it was the cactus speaking.

It was pretty funny the next morning when the neighbors woke up and found a gnome in the pool. I'm the only one with a common border to their property line so they knew it was me who lobbed the gnome in the pool. Laughing

I told them SWIM last night did it, but they didn't believe me. Maybe if I had someone else with me at the time the excuse would have held water.

Some people just have no sense of humor. Razz

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds it stupid.

some people don't care, but you are asking to heckled for it.

SWIM is about as outdated as UTFSE...both were used on certain clandestine chem forums when McKenna was still alive Razz

Though it is not directly related to SWIMming (i hate it as much as everyone else), some aspects of security are beyond the website itself.

Unless you take extra measures to protect yourself, you will leak a DNS query (plaintext) that pretty much identifies you as a nexus lurker/user. For a more dedicated adversary, it would be pretty trivial to correlate the (TLS) traffic leaving your computer with posts at the nexus, particularly so when there is little forum activity.

This is the time to really find out who you are and enjoy every moment you have. Take advantage of it.

Ha.. I have a find/replace browser extension that changes "swim" to "I" and "swiy" to "you". It kinda helps.
