Hi all, Some of you may be aware that I had my first experience with Aya very recently (https://www.dmt-nexus.me/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=58314) but it certainly wasn't the most successful Following an awesome guide on this very forum, I used an old cotton shirt to filter the x3 brews I made, covering a pan with the shirt and pouring the liquids through it. After this process, the liquid seemed to be clear. Reducing it down produced some sediment however... and stuff that actually looked like bark Consequently, my reduced down brew was full of bits; is this normal, or was extra filtration required? Thanks in advance ![Smile](/forum/images/emoticons/smile.png)

Depends on what you think is "normal". The bark and dark substance is what makes you nauseous and vomit. If you want the "genuine" experience, sure you can just drink it.
However you can filter most of the gunk out without affecting the potency (or very much of it at least). A cloth is usable to get most of the coarser material (which would clog finer filters), but not enough. What I do is use paper towels in several layers first (coffee filter is too fine at first and doesn't withstand my technique below). Then leave it in the fridge for a night, a lot of sediment will fall out still. Decant and run it through a filter again. After this, it is probably much improved already, but you can go a step further.
Get a plastic soda bottle and drill a hole in the bottle cap. Put the tea in and put a thrice folded piece of paper towel (you can add a cotton ball or eye pad too) on the opening, pushing it down with the cap. Now you have a ghetto pressure filter. Squeeze it out until filter material is completely clogged. Rinse, repeat.
To finish up you can use the egg white trick and it should be almost completely clear, with only a mild bitter taste. No nausea, no vomiting.

Np I forgot to add, instead of using vinegar, try using vit c (ascorbic acid). The vinegar doesn't help with the taste.

Thanks, I shall! I actually love the taste of vinegar mind you, so I wasn't too concerned about it having a negative effect on the taste. That being said, it probably doesn't work quite how I think it does ![Pleased](/forum/images/emoticons/happy.png)

A diluted splash om my salad I dont mind, but the (relative) massive concentrated amount you have to put in for aya; even makes the smell makes my stomach churn

One of my favourite things is drowning chips & gravy in vinegar!

They're kind of expensive but a filter flask/büchner funnel works pretty good. It's a little meth-labby but a 2liter bottle neck and a fluted filter work pretty good. Remember to wet your filter first, it helps secure everytning. The perk of vac filtration vs gravity filtration is a vac filter can be employed here to remove some of the finer sediments. Whenever I've made flavored 'shine (don't ask) I'd allow the brew to sit in the fridge overnight to precip some extra solutes that were absorbed while everything was hot and I'd vac filter. But I am VERY anal. A gravity filter will do you fine ![Pleased](/forum/images/emoticons/happy.png)

You don't necessarily need to grind either barks down very much. There isn't a lot to filter out if the bark is kept mostly in splinters. And with the sediment it's easy enough to just filter with a cotton shirt draped around the mouth of a mason jar, occasionally re-positioning to another part of the shirt so that the sediment or egg whites don't build up so much the liquid can't flow through. Do you know how you got that dent, in your top lip? .. Way back, before you were born, I told you a secret, then I put my finger there and I said, Shhhhhh

I put mine through a meshed bag to filter out the big bits, then through a tea infuser to keep out the sludge. Even with this filtering, there's still loads of sediment. So I put the jars in the fridge over night, to give it time to settle. Careful decanting keeps the sediment separate, and the final brew free of bits. Peace. Love. Unity.

Thanks for sharing about your pressure filter MrVortex. I can think of several applications for it right off the top of my head and will be adding it to my toolbox! I already asked Alice.

Np ![Razz](/forum/images/emoticons/tongue.png) It was actually loosely inspired by someone else who had build something with two soda bottles, but somehow sticking it together with duct tape never quite worked for me. So I thought of this somewhat simpler version. As you might notice you can never get the cap on with a folder paper towel. This is intended; the cap is meant as an easy way to hold the filter in place manually, and lessen the spilling. Also, the more it gets clogged, the finer the gunk is you're filtering. So press down hard on it. As you will lose at least some of the active ingredients this way, I do not recommend this for very concentrated solutions (since its also a bit messy), do this before you reduce the tea.
