Anyone and everyone agrees that the best way to get rid of your basic soup is to use it for its intended purpose. Drain cleaner. 99% of the time, yes, that is the best way to dispose of it.. But today has showed me that it is not always the case. I just finished a recent extract and dumped the soup down my drain. Ran the water for a minute to clear it through. I went about my business for another 30 minutes when I hear a "PWOOMP, clank clank" come from my kitchen. I walk in to find the drain seal had corroded away, and popped the drain out. The seal had completely eroded from what I could only assume was the basic soup(along with years of regular use). It costed 10.25 to fix, but still.. You dont always know what effect youre having on your environment until after its destroyed. That broken piece is severely corroded metal, the black part underneath is some other material..

Evaporate off the water? Dealing with solid waste is way easier.

Neutralize the base.

You would need a huge amount of vinegar for that.

just flush it.

base will readily dilute. just don't flush nonpolar solvents, especially halogenated solvents.

flush as in down the toilet? that seems safer than a sink.

either, it doesn't matter. base/acid is fine to discard in wastewater, it's aromatic solvents and halocarbons that aren't so nice to organisms beneath the watertable

I vote for catapulting base soups into the sun.

i use citric acid to neutralize and then flush that down the toilet. Seems safer than lye to me. Takes a fair amount though, so dont get the smallest sized bag in the grocery store, you can get it in decent sizes and mine is also food safe, so i even used it for candy once ^^

i think people seem to forget.....

lye is drain cleaner.

there's no harm in pouring it down the drain.
neutralizing it is just a waste of acid.

edit: i just read about the corrosion issue in the OP. in the case of older pipes, it would behoove one to neutralize their basic phase prior to pouing it down the drain. modern plumbing is PVC, which is impervious to strongly basic solutions.
