Dear Nexians,

Last Friday I for the first time (although accidentally) tripped on Syrian Rue. I had done basic extraction from a small batch of seeds and dissolved the product in alcohol. It was a very crude extraction, so I can only imagine it would contain about the same actives as the whole seeds.

My plan was to use a low dose to potentiate LSD. I had done this succesfully earlier, using about 3,5ml of the extract half an hour before taking the tab. It was to this day the most profound trip I've taken.

However this time due to poor memory I took 7,5-8ml. Quite soon, in an hour or so, I noticed I was coming on way more strongly than before. Strong bursts of euphoria and stimulation plus that definite feeling of a different mindset. Later on there was some nausea also and I had to purge once. I also couldn't stay up for long periods before I had to sit or lie down.

Now does anyone know what kind of pharmacological activity explains that it is possible to trip with harmalas? You can't do that with moclobemide, right? Can moclobemide come even close to providing the subtle feeling of lower harmala doses?

Does harmala alkaloids or any other constituents of the seeds have some serotonergic activity? Later on after taking the seeds I proceeded to take a tab of LSD. It worked well and took the nausea away. However I could not help feeling that the acid could have been stronger and that tripping on harmala had kind of raised my immediate tolerance level.

Harmalas do have affinity for 5ht receptors and will also stop serotonin metabolising among other things. It also has a number of different alkaloids that synergize.
