I've been wondering for awhile if there is a kind of rebound production of monoamine oxidase to account for the psilocybe flooding our brains, as mao is essential to protecting the brain from high levels of monoamines, and can't differentiate between one or the other. Since mushroom tolerance lasts a half a week or so it stands to reason that other monoamines would also be oxidized quickly during that time. Our brains learn that there's a surplus of something that could potentially be a threat to survival and attempt to correct it until there isn't a threat anymore.
In trying to theoretically link that to the "afterglow" effect of mushrooms, the increase in mao temporarily may also clear more than average amounts of feel-good brain chemicals, signalling an increase in production, as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins and whatever are also oxidized more rapidly perhaps our bodies compensate by making more.
That might also explain how taking an maoi can lead to antidepressant effects as your brain might jack up mao production afterward, clear happy chemicals more rapidly and lead to your body making more for those 3-4 days.
Speculating on the difference between DMT and Psilocybe and why one might affect this process longer than the other, makes me think its associated with their half-lives in the brain. We all know how long a DMT trip last when compared to a mushroom trip. Psilocybe effects diminish in like 6-8 hours and DMT in like 20 minutes. You can take another DMT hit before long but if it was a direct correlation then you couldn't take a solid DMT hit after mushrooms for quite some time.
The theory also would account for large doses- taking multiple psychedelics while coming up or just large doses of say mushrooms could compromise this more quickly and actually create shorter trips. Your brain doesn't care about whether or not you trip, its function is basically to allow you to live.
THe part that is confounding is why if DMT is metabolized to psilocin that there should be much difference- keeping in mind that one can withstand gut metabolism (coincidentally about a 9 hour process) so regardless, psilocybin is going to metabolize out of the body for awhile when compared to DMT.. idk.
Idk if that makes real sense. I know it all sounds loose and slapped together. I plan to ncbi the ideas later and perhaps support these ideas. I'm not a doctor but if I was junk like this woulda been my thesis.
