Hi, I am new to this forum and to DMT as well.
I am preparing for my first DMT extraction from MHRB using Nomans tek.
I have been lurking around for at least two weeks but I am still not sure if my jars are OK to use as collection jars. They were used for pickling before.
Thanks

Collection jars as in jars just to store your finished product?

Or jars actually to use as part of your extraction?

If youre using them in the extraction process, just be sure theyre cleaned out and rinsed and disenfected. And as long as theyre glass.

My stuff, I wash it first heavily with a light natural soap and hot water, then I fill them with warm water and isopropyl alcohol, usually about 75wat/25iso, and then Ill just give it a good roll, then pour it out and let the glass air dry. You want to use a water as filtered as possible so youre free of chlorine, flouride, etc etc etc.

hi, thanks for your reply. I plan on using them as collection jars for naphtha pulls, I just wasnt sure if their shape is good, from what I have read most people use baking dishes or stuff like that. I will wash them as good as I can or just get new ones.

I only ever use pyrex flat dish for collection of naphtha for freeze precip. Just makes scraping easier. jars are fine to use, just not as easy to collect product at end.

Yes youre really going to have a difficult time scraping jars.

Baking dishes give you plenty of room to get everything. Jars are annoying to work with and youll find it difficult to get everything out of them easiy.

Scraping out jars is not too difficult - scraping out the last bit, maybe. But if you want to recrystallize the product, you could use the jar as the vessel to warm the recrystallization naphta in, that will take out the last bits without much scraping effort. Alternatively, if you are going to do another extraction, having bits of product from the last extraction sticking to the jar is not going to be a problem.

The downside of a tray is the risk of spilling naphta when moving it around and the smell of naphta in your freezer. A jar that can be closed does not have these problems. Another advantage of jars is that after decanting the cold naphta from product crystals, you can put the closed jar back in the freezer upside down, to let the last drops of naphta leech out of the crystals. Finally, keeping the jar closed while it warms up to room temperature stops atmospheric water vapor from condensing onto the product.

This is why I chose flat bottom bowls with high sides and a lid. Scrapes up well, no worry about spillage, and I never had any issues with condensation.

It depends on the size of your hand. My hands dont really fit into jars haha. If you can get your whole hand in a jar, then it might work. But still, jars usually have harsh corners where scraping is a PITA

Thank you all for your contributions, I was thinking about breaking them after freeze precip. I have A LOT of jars so I wont be missing them. That way I (hopefully) will be able to scrap most of those crystals ( if they even form). Do you think that could work ?

Breaking the glass in order to get to the product sounds really stupid, I'm sorry to say so. You risk cutting yourself and little shards of glass will mix with your crystals.

I suggest that either you switch to a tray for freeze precipitation and easy scraping, or recrystallize as I mentioneded above, by redissolving the product in the jar in a minimal amount of hot (not just warm) naptha. Then transfer the saturated solution to another container that is easier to scrape out from and let cool and evaporate off the naphta. You could optionally filter the product-containing hot naphta while transferring.

Just a butterknife works fine.
